Chingola
Chingola lies in the Copperbelt Province in the north of Zambia, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and about four hundred kilometres north of Lusaka. It sits on a high plateau at around thirteen hundred metres, which gives it a mild climate with a warm rainy season from November to April and cool, dry winter nights. The town is laid out along wide streets shaded by jacaranda and flame trees, surrounded by farmland and by the immense earthworks of its mines.
Something like two hundred thousand people live in Chingola and its townships. The city exists because of copper. The Nchanga mine on its edge is one of the largest open-pit copper operations in the world, a terraced excavation several kilometres across, and the associated smelter and refinery have made the district one of the most important sources of copper and cobalt in Africa. The Zambian economy has long depended on this metal, and the fortunes of Chingola have risen and fallen with world prices, changes of ownership and the shift between state and private control.
Copper was known to local people long before Europeans arrived, but industrial mining began in the late 1920s and 1930s, when geologists confirmed the extent of the Nchanga deposit. The town was formally established in 1943 to house workers and their families and grew quickly during the post-war boom under Northern Rhodesian administration. Independence in 1964 brought nationalisation and a period of prosperity, followed by decades of difficulty as prices fell, and then renewed investment from the late 1990s onwards.
Visitors most often come for what lies just outside the town. The Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage, north-west of Chingola, is one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world, caring in vast forest enclosures for animals rescued from the illegal trade across central Africa. The Hippo Pool on the Kafue River is a popular picnic and camping spot where hippopotamuses can be watched from the bank, and the surrounding countryside offers excellent birdwatching and fishing. In the town itself, viewpoints over the open pit, the mine club sports grounds and the busy central market give a vivid sense of everyday Copperbelt life.
Daily life revolves around family, church and football. Nchanga Rangers, the club long supported by the mining company, plays in the national league and commands strong local loyalty. Bemba is widely spoken alongside English, and the population brings together people from many Zambian regions who came for work over several generations. Roads link Chingola with Kitwe, Ndola and the busy border crossing at Kasumbalesa, an important artery for regional trade, and the railway that carries copper towards distant ports also serves the province. Secondary schools, nursing and teacher training colleges and a technical college provide education locally, while universities in Kitwe and Ndola are within easy reach.
Chingola is significant as a centre of Zambian copper production and as the gateway to some of the best known wildlife projects in the country.
