Chinju

Chinju, more commonly written today as Jinju, lies in the southern part of South Korea in South Gyeongsang Province, where the Nam River curves through a basin ringed by wooded hills. It sits inland from the southern coast, about two hours by road from Busan, and the river has shaped both its defences and its beauty for more than a thousand years.

The city is home to roughly three hundred and forty thousand people. It functions as the educational, administrative and cultural centre of the western half of the province, and in recent years a large innovation city district has been developed on its edge, bringing the headquarters of several national public corporations and thousands of new residents.

Chinju occupies an important place in Korean history. During the Japanese invasions of the 1590s its fortress became the scene of two of the most celebrated battles of the war. In the first siege a heavily outnumbered garrison held the walls and won a victory that protected the rice growing provinces to the west. The second siege ended in the fall of the city, and it produced one of the most enduring stories in Korean memory, that of Nongae, a young woman who embraced an enemy commander at a riverside pavilion and threw herself with him into the water below. The rock from which she leapt is still marked and honoured today.

Jinju Fortress remains the heart of the city, its restored walls enclosing the graceful Chokseongnu Pavilion overlooking the river, along with shrines, gates and the Jinju National Museum, which specialises in the history of that war. Every October the river fills with thousands of floating lanterns during the Namgang Lantern Festival, a spectacle that recalls the lanterns once used to signal across the water during the siege and now draws visitors from across the country. A separate autumn festival honours the local drum dance and mask traditions.

Local food is a point of pride. Jinju bibimbap is served with raw beef and a clear seaweed broth, and the city is also known for naengmyeon prepared in a distinctive southern style. Silk weaving has been a specialty here for generations, and Jinju still produces a large share of the silk made in Korea.

Gyeongsang National University anchors a substantial student population, supported by several other colleges, and the city has long had a reputation for scholarship and for producing civil servants and teachers. Express buses, a KTX rail connection through nearby stations and the small airport at Sacheon link Chinju to Seoul, Busan and beyond, while local buses serve the compact urban area.

Beyond the city, the mountains of Jirisan National Park rise to the north and the coastal islands of the south sea lie within easy reach, making Chinju a convenient base for exploring the region.

Chinju is valued for its living history, its riverside setting and one of the most beautiful festivals in East Asia.
