Chipata
Chipata is a city in eastern Zambia and the capital of the Eastern Province. It lies in a valley among green hills close to the border with Malawi, only about thirty kilometres from the crossing at Mchinji, and roughly 570 kilometres east of Lusaka along the Great East Road. The surrounding country is fertile and densely farmed, and the climate is milder than in the low-lying valleys nearby.
The population is estimated at around two hundred thousand, and Chipata is the fastest-growing town in the region. Its importance is threefold. It is the commercial capital of a large agricultural province, it is the principal land gateway between Zambia and Malawi, and it is the base from which most visitors reach South Luangwa National Park, one of the finest wildlife destinations in Africa.
The settlement was founded in the 1890s as Fort Jameson, named after Leander Starr Jameson, and served as the administrative headquarters of North-Eastern Rhodesia in the early colonial period before that role moved westward. Its position on the route between the Nyasaland protectorate and the interior gave it lasting commercial value. The town was renamed Chipata after Zambian independence in 1964, and it was granted city status in 2017, becoming one of the newest cities in the country.
Chipata is a working town rather than a monumental one. The old boma buildings from the colonial era, the cathedral, the large and colourful Chipata Mosque and the busy central market give the centre its character. The best views are from the hills above the town, where the road towards Malawi climbs past the surrounding villages. The real attraction lies to the north: South Luangwa National Park, about two and a half hours away, is the birthplace of the walking safari and is famous for leopards, huge elephant and buffalo herds, and the endemic Thornicroft's giraffe. The Luangwa valley escarpment scenery on the way is dramatic in itself.
The dominant culture is that of the Ngoni people, descendants of migrants who moved north from southern Africa in the nineteenth century, alongside Chewa and Nsenga communities. The Nc'wala ceremony, held each February near Chipata, celebrates the first fruits of the harvest with warrior dancing, drumming and the presentation of produce to the Ngoni paramount chief, and it draws thousands of spectators. Chewa masked dancing, known as Gule Wamkulu, is also practised in the surrounding districts.
The economy rests on maize, cotton, groundnuts, tobacco and increasingly on soya, with processing plants and a cotton ginnery in the town. A railway line to Mchinji in Malawi was completed in 2010, and the airport handles light aircraft and charter flights towards the safari camps, while the Great East Road carries most traffic.
Education has expanded considerably, with a college of education, nursing and agricultural training institutions and a growing university presence.
Chipata matters as the lively eastern gateway of Zambia, combining a strong farming economy, a proud Ngoni heritage and access to some of the best wildlife country on the continent.
