Ciudad Bolívar is the capital of Bolívar State, Venezuela's largest state, located in the southeastern part of the country on the southern bank of the Orinoco River. Situated approximately 600 kilometers southeast of Caracas, the city is the gateway to Venezuela's Gran Sabana highlands, Canaima National Park, and the extraordinary table-top mountains known as tepuis. The Orinoco River at this point narrows to its famous "Angostura" (narrows), a natural feature that shaped the city's early history.

The Congress also established Gran Colombia, the federation of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador. In 1846 the city was renamed Ciudad Bolívar in honor of the Liberator.

The historic center of Ciudad Bolívar preserves a remarkable collection of colonial architecture. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Casa del Congreso de Angostura, and the historic governor's palace reflect the colonial heritage of this strategically important river town. The Angostura Bridge, one of Venezuela's most famous landmarks, spans the Orinoco at this narrow point and remains an iconic symbol of the country's infrastructure. The Paseo Orinoco, a riverside promenade, is a popular gathering place with views of the broad river.

Ciudad Bolívar is famous as the source of Angostura Bitters, the renowned cocktail flavoring created here by a German doctor in the 19th century, though production later moved to Trinidad. The surrounding Guayana region, with its extraordinary tepuis (the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lost World"), Angel Falls (the world's highest waterfall), and remarkable biodiversity, makes the city a key base for eco-tourism and adventure travel.
