Cixi

Cixi is a county-level city in northeastern Zhejiang Province in eastern China, located in the Ningbo metropolitan area on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay. With a population of approximately 1.5 million people, Cixi is one of China's most economically dynamic small cities and a significant center of manufacturing, particularly in the electronics, household appliances, and small commodities sectors.

The area of Cixi has been inhabited since ancient times, and archaeological excavations at the Hemudu site nearby have uncovered evidence of the Hemudu culture, one of China's oldest Neolithic agricultural civilizations dating back approximately 7,000 years. The Hemudu Site Museum, now a key attraction in the broader Ningbo area, presents the extraordinary findings from this ancient settlement. The county itself was formally established during the Tang Dynasty and has a history of over a thousand years as an administrative unit.

Cixi is one of the primary birthplaces of the famous Yue kiln celadon ceramic tradition, known as Qingci or greenware, which was among the most prized ceramic products in China and the world from the Han through the Song dynasties. The Shanglin Lake ancient kiln ruins are a protected archaeological site that documents this rich ceramic heritage, and Cixi celadon craftsmanship has been revived by contemporary artisans as a living cultural tradition.

The city's modern economy is driven by industrial manufacturing, with Cixi known particularly as China's leading producer of small household appliances, plugs, sockets, and electrical hardware. The city hosts numerous industrial parks and factory districts producing goods exported worldwide. The Cixi Economic Development Zone and the broader Ningbo metropolitan economy provide a strong commercial infrastructure for local enterprises.

The recently completed cross-sea bridge infrastructure, part of the Hangzhou Bay Bridge network, has significantly shortened the distance from Cixi to Shanghai and improved the city's logistics connectivity. Rail access through Ningbo and expressways connect Cixi to the broader Yangtze River Delta economic region.

Several vocational and technical schools in Cixi support the educational needs of its manufacturing workforce, alongside institutions in nearby Ningbo offering broader academic programs.

Cixi combines an ancient and archaeologically significant past with a vigorously modern manufacturing economy, making it representative of the broader transformation of Zhejiang Province into one of China's most prosperous and entrepreneurially dynamic regions. Its blend of Neolithic heritage, ceramic tradition, and industrial success offers a compelling window into China's layered history and rapid development.
