Cluj-Napoca
Cluj-Napoca is the second-largest city in Romania and the capital of Cluj County, situated in the heart of the historic Transylvania region in northwestern Romania. Known informally as Cluj, it is one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing cities in Eastern Europe, combining a rich multicultural heritage, a thriving university scene, and a growing technology and startup ecosystem that has earned it comparisons to Silicon Valley.
With a population of approximately 320,000, Cluj-Napoca is the main economic, academic, and cultural center of Transylvania. The city hosts one of the largest student populations in Romania, spread across several universities, the most prestigious being Babeș-Bolyai University — one of the largest universities in Romania and a major research institution. This large student community fuels a vibrant cultural life, with numerous theaters, music venues, festivals, and an active café and bar culture that makes Cluj one of the liveliest cities in the country.
The city's origins trace to the Roman settlement of Napoca, established in the 2nd century AD. During the medieval period it grew as a prosperous Saxon town, and its multicultural character — shaped by Romanian, Hungarian, German, and Jewish communities — continues to define its identity today. The historic center is built around Union Square (Piața Unirii), dominated by the Gothic Saint Michael's Church, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Romania. The equestrian statue of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, born in Cluj in 1443, stands before the church and remains a focal point of the city's complex Hungarian and Romanian heritage.
Cluj-Napoca has a flourishing arts and cultural scene. The National Theatre and Opera House is one of Romania's most respected cultural institutions. The TIFF (Transylvania International Film Festival) held each June is the largest film festival in Romania and one of the most important in southeastern Europe. The Untold Festival, a major electronic music event held each summer in Central Park, regularly features world-class artists and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors. The city's museum quarter around the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania and the Pharmacy Museum documents the region's history in depth.
Cluj-Napoca's economy has shifted significantly toward the technology sector. It is home to numerous IT companies and software development firms, and the tech ecosystem has attracted international investment and a community of young, English-speaking professionals. This has driven rapid urban development and a sophisticated food and hospitality scene.
Cluj-Napoca International Airport connects the city to many European destinations, with direct flights to major hubs. Road and rail links connect it to Bucharest (about five hours by express train) and to other Romanian cities. The city center is compact and walkable, with excellent public transport.
Cluj-Napoca is a city in confident ascent, offering visitors a compelling blend of medieval architecture, multicultural history, student energy, and modern ambition in the heart of Transylvania.
