Coacalco

Coacalco, officially Coacalco de Berriozábal, lies in the northern part of the Mexico City metropolitan area, within the State of Mexico. It occupies the floor of the Valley of Mexico at more than two thousand two hundred metres above sea level, pressed against the wooded slopes of the Sierra de Guadalupe, which rises immediately to the south and separates the town from the capital. The mountain range gives the municipality its green backdrop, and on clear days the snow-capped volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl appear on the southern horizon.

Close to three hundred thousand people live in a densely built municipality that is one of the smallest in area in the state. Coacalco is overwhelmingly residential, developed from the 1970s onwards with large planned housing estates that absorbed families moving out of Mexico City. Most working residents commute to the capital or to the industrial corridors of Tlalnepantla, Ecatepec and Cuautitlán, while local employment comes from retail, services, schools, health care and small workshops. The municipality has one of the highest concentrations of shopping centres in the region.

The name comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as the place of the house of the serpent, a reference to a pre-Hispanic temple or to the serpent-headed imagery of the valley cultures. The area lay within the territory influenced by Teotihuacan and later by the Aztec state, and after the conquest it became a colonial village administered by Franciscan friars, who built the parish church that still stands in the old centre. For centuries it remained a small farming settlement producing maize and pulque. In 1862 the town added the name of Felipe Berriozábal, a liberal general of the wars against conservative forces and the French intervention. Urbanisation arrived suddenly in the second half of the twentieth century and transformed the fields into a continuous city.

The colonial parish of San Francisco de Asís, with its stone façade and quiet atrium, remains the historic heart, surrounded by the old plaza and municipal buildings. Above the town, the Sierra de Guadalupe state park protects one of the last large areas of natural vegetation in the northern valley, with walking and cycling trails, viewpoints across the entire metropolis and populations of birds, rabbits and coyotes. The modern side of Coacalco is best seen in its large malls, cinemas and sports centres, which draw visitors from neighbouring municipalities.

Local life follows the calendar of neighbourhood patron saint festivals, with fireworks, processions and food stalls, alongside a strong tradition of markets selling barbacoa, carnitas, tlacoyos, pulque and pan de fiesta. Community sport, especially football, is popular in the parks.

Bus rapid transit and ordinary bus routes connect the municipality to Mexico City metro stations nearby, and major highways run north towards Querétaro and Pachuca. Technological institutes and private university campuses serve the local population, with the vast educational offering of the capital close at hand.

Coacalco is a good example of the fast-growing suburban Mexico that surrounds one of the largest cities in the world.
