Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is a city located in El Paso County at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in the state of Colorado, United States. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,840 meters — one of the highest major cities in the United States — the city lies directly east of Pikes Peak, one of Colorado's most famous summits at 4,302 meters. With a population of approximately 480,000 people, Colorado Springs is the second largest city in Colorado after Denver, located about 110 kilometers to the north, and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the American West.

The city was founded in 1871 by General William Palmer, the entrepreneur behind the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, who envisioned it as a refined resort city that would attract wealthy tourists seeking the therapeutic benefits of the mountain air. This vision was not entirely far-fetched — Colorado Springs and the surrounding area were promoted for their climate as a treatment for tuberculosis in the late nineteenth century, and the town attracted artists, invalids, and wealthy visitors from the East Coast and from Europe. The elegant Broadmoor Hotel, which opened in 1918 and remains a celebrated luxury resort today, is a physical embodiment of this genteel resort-city vision.

Colorado Springs is home to a remarkable concentration of military facilities that make it one of the most significant defense and national security installations in the United States. Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, Fort Carson Army base, the Air Force Academy, and Cheyenne Mountain Complex — the legendary underground command center carved into a granite mountain — are all located in or near the city. This military presence makes Colorado Springs critical to American space surveillance, missile defense, and strategic command operations, and employs tens of thousands of military and civilian personnel.

The Garden of the Gods is Colorado Springs' most iconic natural attraction — a public park featuring dramatic red sandstone rock formations rising against the backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak. The formations, some reaching heights of over 100 meters, create an otherworldly landscape of spires, arches, and balanced rocks that has been a destination for visitors since the nineteenth century. The park is free to enter and offers hiking, rock climbing, and spectacular photography opportunities throughout the year.

The Pikes Peak Highway provides access to the summit of Pikes Peak by road or cog railway, and the summit offers views extending for hundreds of kilometers across the Great Plains. The city's annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb — one of the oldest automobile races in the United States — is a celebrated motorsport event attracting competitors and spectators from around the world.

With its dramatic mountain setting, extraordinary natural scenery, massive military presence, growing tech sector, and outdoor recreation culture, Colorado Springs has established itself as one of the most distinctive and rapidly developing cities in the Rocky Mountain West.
