Comilla

Comilla is a historic city located in southeastern Bangladesh, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of the capital Dhaka. Situated in the Comilla District of the Chittagong Division, it lies near the Gumti River and serves as a major regional hub for commerce, education, and administration. The city has a population of around 400,000 and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban centers in the Bengal region.

The history of Comilla stretches back over two millennia. Archaeological excavations at nearby Mainamati have uncovered a remarkable Buddhist civilization that flourished here between the 7th and 12th centuries. The Shalban Vihara, a large Buddhist monastery complex, and several stupas and artifacts discovered in the area offer a fascinating window into the spiritual and cultural life of ancient Bengal. These findings have placed Comilla on the map as one of the most archaeologically significant cities in Bangladesh.

The Mainamati Archaeological Museum is one of the city's premier attractions, displaying coins, jewelry, lamps, and other relics unearthed from the hilltop excavations. Visitors to Comilla often spend time exploring these historic sites, which provide a vivid picture of Buddhist monastic life in the region. The Shahi Mosque, built during the Mughal period, and other religious landmarks also draw visitors interested in the layered history of the area.

Comilla has a strong tradition of education and intellectual life. The city is home to the Victoria Government College, one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges in Bangladesh, as well as Comilla University, which has grown into an important center of higher learning. The city also played a role in the development of the cooperative movement in Bangladesh; the Comilla Model, a pioneering approach to rural cooperative development, was developed here in the 1960s and has influenced agricultural policy across South Asia.

The local economy of Comilla relies heavily on agriculture, trade, and small-scale industry. The city is particularly well-known for its khadi fabric, a hand-woven textile that has been produced in the region for generations, and for rasmalai, a popular sweet made from chhana (fresh cheese curds) that is considered one of the finest in Bangladesh. These local products have helped Comilla develop a distinctive identity within the country.

Transportation links are strong, with Comilla sitting along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, one of the most important road corridors in Bangladesh. The city also has a railway station that connects it to major destinations across the country. With ongoing investment in urban development and infrastructure, Comilla continues to grow as a dynamic regional center, offering a compelling blend of ancient history, educational excellence, and vibrant local culture.
