Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is a coastal city in southern Texas, in the United States, built around a broad and shallow bay of the same name where the Nueces River meets the Gulf of Mexico. A chain of barrier islands, including Mustang Island and the long sweep of Padre Island, shelters the bay from the open sea, and the city looks out over calm water crossed by sailing boats and tankers. Its nickname, the Sparkling City by the Sea, comes from that setting.
About three hundred and twenty thousand people live within the city, and around half a million in the wider metropolitan area. Corpus Christi is a major port, consistently among the busiest in the United States by tonnage and now the country's leading gateway for crude oil exports. Refineries, petrochemical plants, wind energy manufacturing and a large naval air station make it the economic anchor of the south Texas coast.
The bay was named on the feast of Corpus Christi by a Spanish expedition in 1519, but permanent settlement came much later. A trading post established in 1839 by Henry Kinney grew into a town that served as a staging ground for American forces before the war with Mexico. The port was dredged and opened to deep-draught shipping in 1926, transforming the local economy, and the discovery of oil and gas in the region secured its industrial future. Hurricanes have repeatedly shaped the city, most recently Harvey in 2017.
The waterfront holds the main attractions. The aircraft carrier USS Lexington, veteran of the Pacific war, is moored permanently as a museum ship, and beside it stand the Texas State Aquarium and the Art Museum of South Texas. Padre Island National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world, protects nesting sea turtles and empty dunes within a short drive. The Mirador overlooks along Ocean Drive, the marina and the beaches at North Beach are used year-round in a climate that stays warm.
Corpus Christi has a strongly Hispanic character, with a Mexican-American majority whose food, music and festivals define local life. The singer Selena Quintanilla grew up here, and her memorial and museum draw admirers from across the Americas. The Buccaneer Days festival, the Texas Jazz Festival and Dia de los Muertos celebrations fill the calendar, while windsurfing and kiteboarding thrive in the reliable coastal breeze that makes the city one of the best places in North America for the sport.
Transport centres on Interstate 37, which runs north-west to San Antonio, and on the Harbor Bridge, whose replacement is among the largest infrastructure projects in Texas. Corpus Christi International Airport provides regional connections, and the port handles both cargo and cruise traffic.
Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi occupies its own island campus and is known for marine science research, alongside Del Mar College and a medical training presence.
Corpus Christi is important as an energy port, a naval training centre and a beach city all at once, offering visitors warm water, wide skies and a distinctly Texan blend of cultures.
