Cotabato

Cotabato, formally Cotabato City, lies in the south-western part of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, near the mouth of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, the longest river system on the island. The city sits on flat delta land between the river and Illana Bay, with the volcanic cone of Mount Apo far to the east and the hills of Maguindanao rising behind it. Its name comes from the Maguindanaon words for stone fort.

Around three hundred and thirty thousand people live here. Cotabato has a particular political importance, as it serves as the seat of government of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the self-governing region created in 2019 after decades of conflict and negotiation. It is therefore the administrative and symbolic centre of Muslim Filipino political life, even though the city itself is geographically independent of the surrounding province.

The area has been settled for centuries and was the heart of the Sultanate of Maguindanao, one of the most powerful states in the pre-colonial Philippines. Islam was introduced here in the sixteenth century by the missionary Shariff Mohammed Kabungsuwan, and the sultans successfully resisted Spanish control for far longer than most of the archipelago. Spanish forces established a fort in the nineteenth century, and under American rule Cotabato became a provincial capital. The second half of the twentieth century brought migration from the north, land disputes and a long armed conflict, and the peace process that followed reshaped the city's role.

The most striking landmark is the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid, the largest mosque in the Philippines, with golden domes and four tall minarets set among palm trees on the edge of the city. PC Hill, a rocky outcrop in the centre, offers views over the delta and holds monuments to the region's history. The old Tamontaka church, founded by Jesuit missionaries in the nineteenth century, and the Kutawato caves beneath the hill are also worth seeing. The river itself, busy with small boats, remains the visual centre of the city.

Culture here is predominantly Maguindanaon and Iranun, expressed in kulintang gong music, the graceful singkil and pangalay dances, brass casting, and the vivid inaul silk weaving whose patterns are a source of local pride. Ramadan and Eid celebrations are major public events, and the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival each December commemorates the arrival of Islam with a river parade of decorated boats. Christian and indigenous Lumad communities also form part of the mix.

Transport is served by Cotabato Awang Airport, with flights to Manila and Cebu, by the national highway network linking the city to Davao and General Santos, and by a seaport handling regional cargo. Tricycles and jeepneys provide local travel.

Education is led by Notre Dame University, one of the oldest Catholic universities in Mindanao, alongside Cotabato City State Polytechnic College and Islamic institutes.

Cotabato matters as the political and cultural capital of Muslim Mindanao, a city where a long sultanate heritage and a new experiment in regional self-government meet.
