Cuenca
Cuenca is a historic city in east-central Spain, the capital of Cuenca Province in the Castile-La Mancha region, dramatically situated on a clifftop above two river gorges, the Júcar and the Huécar. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, Cuenca is one of the most visually spectacular cities in Spain, best known for its iconic Casas Colgadas — the Hanging Houses — a row of medieval structures whose timber balconies cantilever over the edge of the cliff hundreds of meters above the gorge floor.
With a population of approximately 54,000, Cuenca is a modest-sized city whose UNESCO recognition has helped establish it as a significant cultural tourism destination. The city has a long history as a center of wool and textile production during the medieval period, when its strategic hilltop position made it a sought-after military stronghold. Conquered from the Moors by Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1177, it became an important royal city and an episcopal see.
The old city, the Casco Antiguo, is perched on a narrow promontory between the two gorges and is accessible from the modern lower city via a bridge and a steep ascent. The Cuenca Cathedral, begun in the late 12th century in a Norman-Gothic style unusual for Spain, contains an impressive collection of art including tapestries, paintings, and abstract sculptures donated by the artists who were drawn to the city in the 20th century. The Casas Colgadas, perched at the edge of the Huécar gorge, now house one of Spain's most celebrated museums of abstract art, the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español — a collection assembled by artist Fernando Zóbel that includes works by Tàpies, Chillida, Saura, and other leading figures of 20th-century Spanish abstraction.
The view from the Puente de San Pablo, a pedestrian bridge spanning the Huécar gorge, back towards the hanging houses and the cathedral is one of the great urban panoramas of Spain. The gorges themselves are threaded with walking trails providing close-up views of the dramatic limestone rock formations and the medieval city above. The Cuenca Museum in the old city covers the region's archaeology and history from prehistoric times through the medieval period.
Cuenca's cuisine reflects its inland Castilian character: morteruelo (a rich meat pâté), tiznao (bacalao and peppers), and ajoarriero (a garlic and cod dish) are traditional specialties. The city has a growing restaurant scene particularly concentrated in the old city. Its position among spectacular natural scenery makes it a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities in the gorges and surrounding serranías.
Cuenca is located about 160 kilometers from Madrid via the A40 motorway. High-speed AVE trains connect the city to Madrid Atocha in about 55 minutes. A local bus connects the lower city to the old town on the hilltop above.
Cuenca is a city of extraordinary visual drama and cultural richness, offering an experience of medieval Spain that is both genuinely spectacular and surprisingly intimate.
