Cuiabá
Cuiabá is the capital city of Mato Grosso, one of Brazil's largest states, located in the west-central region of the country. Widely recognized as the geographic center of South America, the city sits in a remarkable position where the Cerrado savanna ecosystem meets the edge of the Amazon and Pantanal regions. With a population of approximately 620,000 people in the city and over one million in the metropolitan area, Cuiabá is a vibrant regional capital and an important gateway to some of Brazil's most extraordinary natural environments.
Cuiabá was founded in 1719 during the era of the Brazilian gold rush, when bandeirantes — Portuguese colonial explorers and treasure hunters — discovered gold and diamonds in the region. The settlement that grew around the mining activities became one of the wealthiest in colonial Brazil, and the city retains much of the architectural character from its prosperous colonial past. It was formally elevated to the status of a city in 1835 and became the state capital as Mato Grosso developed into one of Brazil's most important agricultural frontiers.
The historic center of Cuiabá is a treasure of colonial Brazilian architecture. The Old Cathedral of Sé, built in the 18th century, stands as one of the most iconic religious monuments in the state. The Mato Grosso State Museum and the Rondon Museum, dedicated to the life of the legendary explorer Marshal Cândido Rondon, offer valuable insights into the region's history and indigenous cultures. The Praça da República is a lively public space at the heart of the city surrounded by significant civic buildings.
Cuiabá serves as one of the most important gateways to the Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland, which covers much of western Mato Grosso and extends into Bolivia and Paraguay. The Pantanal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the planet's most biodiverse habitats, home to jaguars, capybaras, caimans, hyacinth macaws, and giant river otters. Ecotourism is a significant sector of the local economy, with many visitors using Cuiabá as a base to explore this extraordinary wilderness.
The city's economy is also driven by agribusiness, as Mato Grosso is one of Brazil's leading producers of soybeans, corn, and cotton. Cuiabá serves as the commercial and financial center for this vast agricultural hinterland. The city has modern shopping centers, a growing service sector, and expanding logistics infrastructure to support the region's agricultural exports.
The Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) is the largest academic institution in the state and plays a vital role in education and research. The city is served by Marechal Rondon International Airport, which connects Cuiabá to São Paulo, Brasília, and other major Brazilian cities. Despite its remote location, Cuiabá is well integrated into Brazil's transportation network via federal highways and regular air service.
Cuiabá's unique position as a colonial gold-rush city, a gateway to Brazil's most dramatic natural treasures, and a hub for one of the country's most productive agricultural states makes it a city of compelling contrasts and extraordinary significance in the Brazilian interior.
