Daejeon

Daejeon is the fifth-largest city in South Korea and the capital of South Chungcheong Province, located in the geographic center of the Korean peninsula approximately 160 kilometers south of Seoul. With a population of approximately 1.5 million people, Daejeon serves as one of South Korea's most important science, technology, and administrative hubs and is strategically positioned at the junction of the country's major road and rail corridors.

Historically a modest market town, Daejeon grew substantially after the construction of the Gyeongbu railway line at the start of the 20th century, which made it a key transportation node between Seoul and Busan. The city expanded further during Korea's rapid industrialization in the latter half of the 20th century, but its modern identity was most profoundly shaped by its selection as the home of South Korea's national science and research infrastructure.

Daejeon's Daedeok Innopolis, a sprawling research and technology complex established in the 1970s and 1980s, is home to over 1,500 public and private research institutions, government laboratories, and technology companies. It is considered one of the world's leading science cities, housing the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, commonly known as KAIST, which consistently ranks among the top engineering and technology universities in Asia. The complex is a driving force behind South Korea's technological competitiveness in semiconductors, biotechnology, robotics, and information technology.

The Expo Science Park, built on the site of the 1993 Daejeon Expo, is a popular science-themed leisure attraction featuring rides, exhibitions, and educational facilities. The National Science Museum and the Natural History Museum nearby contribute to the city's reputation as a destination for science education and discovery. Ppuri Park celebrates the genealogical traditions of Korean clan culture.

Daejeon's transportation infrastructure is excellent, anchored by the KTX high-speed rail station that connects the city to Seoul in under an hour and to Busan in approximately an hour and a half. The city also has an efficient urban metro system and bus network, and Cheongju International Airport is within easy reach for regional and international flights.

Beyond KAIST, Chungnam National University and several other universities make Daejeon a significant center of higher education, supporting a large and youthful student population.

Daejeon's central geographic location, status as South Korea's science capital, efficient modern infrastructure, and convenient access to the scenic mountains and valleys of the surrounding Chungcheong region make it a highly livable and forward-looking city that plays a vital role in shaping Korea's technological future.
