Current Time in Damanhur, Egypt

Damanhur stands in the western Nile Delta of Egypt, roughly midway between Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast and the great river branch at Rosetta. It is the capital of Beheira Governorate and sits in flat, extremely fertile country threaded by canals, where cotton, rice, wheat and citrus grow in dense green squares between villages of low brick houses. The Mahmoudiyah Canal, cut in the nineteenth century, passes nearby on its way to Alexandria.

About a quarter of a million people live in the city, with a far larger population in the surrounding governorate. Damanhur functions as the administrative, educational and market centre for one of Egypt's most productive agricultural regions, and its warehouses, cotton gins and food-processing plants handle much of the delta's harvest.

The city is very old. In pharaonic times it was called Dimi-en-Hor, the town of Horus, and it served as a cult centre for the falcon god, whose name still echoes in the modern one. The Greeks knew it as Hermopolis Parva, and under Roman and Byzantine rule it remained a provincial capital of the region then called Lower Egypt. Later centuries brought Arab, Fatimid and Ottoman administration, and by the nineteenth century Damanhur had become an important stop on the road and rail links that Muhammad Ali Pasha built to tie Alexandria to Cairo. Very little of the ancient town survives above ground, since successive settlements were built directly over their predecessors.

Visitors come for atmosphere rather than monuments. The central mosque, the Coptic churches, the covered markets and the elegant early twentieth-century public buildings around the main square give the city its character, and the Damanhur opera house, part of the national cultural network, hosts concerts and recitals. The city is proud of its literary tradition and of the poets and singers born in the region, and it is closely associated with Egyptian classical music. Cafés along the tree-lined streets fill in the evenings, and the weekly agricultural market is a spectacle of noise and colour.

Beheira Governorate as a whole offers the ruins of ancient Naucratis, the desert monasteries of Wadi Natrun to the south and the Mediterranean beaches to the north, all within a comfortable day trip. The countryside around Damanhur, with its water buffalo, palm-lined canals and mudbrick villages, is quintessential delta Egypt.

Transport is straightforward and frequent. The main Cairo–Alexandria railway runs through the city, giving fast trains in both directions, and the agricultural road and the desert highway carry constant bus and minibus traffic. Alexandria is little more than an hour away. Damanhur University, established as an independent institution in 2010 after decades as a branch of Alexandria University, has faculties of medicine, agriculture, veterinary science and the arts, and it has made the city a genuine student town.

Damanhur rewards travellers who want to see working Egypt away from the tourist trail, a delta capital with an ancient name and a thoroughly modern rhythm.
