Dammam

Dammam is the capital city of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, located on the shore of the Arabian Gulf on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Together with the neighboring cities of Al-Khobar and Dhahran, it forms a major conurbation often referred to as the Dammam Metropolitan Area or the Eastern Province Urban Cluster, with a combined population of several million people. Dammam serves as the administrative, commercial, and transportation hub of Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern Province, the region that underlies the kingdom's petroleum wealth.

The modern history of Dammam is inseparable from the discovery of oil. In 1938, the Dammam No. 7 well, drilled by the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco), struck oil in commercially viable quantities for the first time in Saudi Arabia, transforming the small fishing village of Dammam into the gateway to one of the largest petroleum reserves ever discovered. The subsequent development of the oil industry brought enormous investment, infrastructure, and population growth that converted the Eastern Province from a sparsely inhabited coastal region into one of the wealthiest areas in the world.

The King Fahd Causeway, an engineering marvel spanning twenty-five kilometers across the Arabian Gulf, connects Dammam and Al-Khobar with Bahrain and is one of the longest causeways in the world. This vital link has facilitated trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between the Eastern Province and the island nation of Bahrain. The Dammam corniche along the Arabian Gulf shore is a popular recreational waterfront offering parks, walkways, and views of the gulf waters.

The city's cultural offerings include the Regional Museum of Dammam, which showcases archaeological finds from the Eastern Province spanning millennia of settlement in the Arabian Peninsula. The Dammam Heritage Village preserves traditional Saudi architecture and crafts, offering visitors a glimpse of pre-oil life in the Eastern Province. The King Fahd Park is one of the largest public parks in Saudi Arabia, providing green space and outdoor facilities for residents.

King Fahd International Airport, located northwest of Dammam, is one of the largest airports in the world by area and serves the Eastern Province with connections to domestic Saudi destinations and international routes. The city is connected to Riyadh and other Saudi cities by the Saudi Landbridge Railway, one of the longest rail lines in the Middle East. The Dammam port is one of the country's busiest commercial harbors.

The University of Dammam, now known as Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, is one of the main higher education institutions in the Eastern Province, offering programs in medicine, engineering, and a wide range of other disciplines. King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, located in nearby Dhahran, is one of the top technical universities in the Arab world.

Dammam's economy is dominated by the petroleum industry, with Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company, headquartered in nearby Dhahran. Petrochemical manufacturing, logistics, construction, and services round out the city's diversified economic base.

Dammam stands at the epicenter of Saudi Arabia's oil wealth and ambition. As the kingdom pursues Vision 2030 to diversify its economy beyond petroleum, Dammam is positioning itself as a logistics gateway and industrial hub that will drive the transformation of the Arabian Peninsula's economic future.
