Darbhanga

Darbhanga is a city in the northern part of the state of Bihar in eastern India, lying on the flat alluvial plain between the Ganges and the Nepalese border. It is the principal town of Mithila, a historic cultural region with its own language, art and traditions, and it stands amid a countryside laced with rivers, ponds and mango groves. The Bagmati and Kamala rivers pass nearby, bringing fertile silt but also frequent flooding during the monsoon, which shapes life and building patterns across the district.

Around three hundred and fifty thousand people live in the city, making it one of the largest in Bihar and the administrative headquarters of both a district and a division. Darbhanga is best known as the seat of the Darbhanga Raj, one of the wealthiest and most influential zamindari estates in colonial India, and as the intellectual capital of Mithila, a region long celebrated for Sanskrit learning, logic and poetry.

The Raj family rose to prominence in the sixteenth century and by the nineteenth century controlled a vast territory across northern Bihar. Successive maharajas built palaces, endowed schools and temples, financed the university system of the region and were prominent patrons of the arts. Their fortified complex, the Darbhanga Fort, still encloses several grand buildings, among them the Anand Bagh, Nargona and Rambagh palaces, whose pale colonnades and gardens recall an era of great landed wealth that ended with land reform after independence.

Visitors are drawn to the Shyama Mai temple, built on the cremation ground of a former maharaja and one of the most venerated shrines in the region, and to the Manokamna temple within the fort walls. The Chandradhari Museum displays sculpture, coins, ivory and manuscripts gathered by a local collector, while the many large tanks and lakes scattered through the city give it an unusually watery character. Mithila or Madhubani painting, with its bold outlines, mythological scenes and dense floral patterns, is produced throughout the surrounding villages and sold worldwide.

Maithili is widely spoken here and supports a living literature, theatre and folk music tradition, and festivals such as Chhath, Durga Puja and Sama Chakeva fill the streets each year. The district is India's leading producer of makhana, the puffed seed of the fox nut lily harvested from ponds, and fish, mangoes and litchis are equally characteristic of local tables.

Darbhanga is well served by railways and by an airport that opened to commercial flights in 2020, greatly improving links with Delhi and Mumbai. Education remains central to its identity: Lalit Narayan Mithila University, a long established medical college, a Sanskrit university and an institute of technology all draw students from across northern Bihar.

Darbhanga matters as the cultural heart of Mithila, a place where classical scholarship, folk art and a distinctive regional identity remain visibly alive.
