Delft is a historic city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, situated between Rotterdam and The Hague on the Schie canal. Famous around the world for its distinctive hand-painted blue-and-white Delftware pottery, as the birthplace of painter Johannes Vermeer, as the site of the Dutch royal family's mausoleum, and as home to one of the world's leading technical universities, Delft is a city of remarkable historical and cultural significance in a compact, beautifully preserved package.

With a population of approximately 103,000, Delft is a medium-sized Dutch city that draws a very large number of visitors each year, attracted by its canal-lined streets, its historic monuments, and its strong associations with Dutch Golden Age culture. The Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), founded in 1842 and consistently ranked among the top engineering universities in the world, enrolls around 26,000 students and gives the city a dynamic, international academic character alongside its heritage tourism offer.

Delft's historic inner city, centered on the Markt (Market Square), is one of the best-preserved examples of a 17th-century Dutch city. The square is flanked by the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), a Gothic structure begun in 1393, and the Stadhuis (Town Hall). The Nieuwe Kerk contains the mausoleum of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, the founder of the Dutch Republic who was assassinated in Delft in 1584. The Dutch Royal Family's mausoleum is also located here — the crypt contains the remains of monarchs from the House of Orange-Nassau stretching back to William the Silent. The Oude Kerk (Old Church), which leans noticeably due to its foundations, contains the tomb of Vermeer and of the scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, was born, lived, and died in Delft, and the city has embraced this connection fully. The Vermeer Centre (Vermeer Centrum Delft) provides an immersive exploration of Vermeer's life and working methods, and visitors can trace locations connected to his paintings through the city's streets. The Royal Delft porcelain factory (De Porceleyne Fles), founded in 1653 and the only original Delftware factory still operating, offers factory tours, museum exhibitions, and the chance to watch painters decorating pottery by hand.

The city's canal network, crossed by dozens of picturesque bridges, creates the characteristic Dutch streetscape of tree-lined water, historic gabled houses, and barges. Cycling is the primary mode of transport. The Prinsenhof Museum, housed in the building where William the Silent was assassinated, covers the history of the Dutch Republic with excellent collections of Delftware, paintings, and historical artifacts.

Delft is served by frequent intercity trains from Amsterdam (about 45 minutes), The Hague (about 10 minutes), and Rotterdam (about 12 minutes). The A13 motorway connects it to both Rotterdam and The Hague. The city center is easily navigated on foot or by bicycle.
