Denver

Denver is the capital and most populous city of the state of Colorado, located on the western edge of the Great Plains at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. With a population of approximately 715,000 within the city and over 2.9 million in the greater metropolitan area, it is the largest city in the Mountain West region of the United States. Situated at an elevation of exactly 5,280 feet — one mile — above sea level, Denver has earned the nickname the "Mile High City." Its position at the convergence of the plains and the mountains gives it both a dynamic urban character and unparalleled access to outdoor recreation.

Denver was founded in 1858 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, established as a mining supply camp at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. It quickly became the most important commercial center in the Rocky Mountain region, growing into a major city by the late 19th century. The discovery of silver and the expansion of the transcontinental railroad cemented Denver's status as the undisputed capital of the Mountain West. Statehood followed in 1876, and Denver was designated the state capital.

Today Denver is one of America's fastest-growing and most prosperous cities, driven by a diversified economy encompassing energy, aerospace, telecommunications, financial services, and a booming technology sector. The city has experienced a dramatic population surge since the 1990s, fueled by its quality of life, outdoor lifestyle, and economic opportunities. Landmark corporations and a growing startup ecosystem have established Denver as a serious tech and business hub.

The city's cultural offerings are extensive. Denver Art Museum is renowned for its outstanding Native American art collection and striking architecture. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Red Rocks Amphitheatre — a breathtaking natural outdoor concert venue in the foothills — and the vibrant River North (RiNo) arts district are among the city's most celebrated attractions. The 16th Street Mall, a pedestrian shopping corridor in the heart of downtown, links the city's central business district with the nearby Union Station, a beautifully restored historic transit hub that has become a culinary and entertainment destination.

Denver is famous for its love of craft beer, with hundreds of breweries operating in the metro area, earning Colorado the title of "Napa Valley of craft beer." The city's outdoor culture is central to its identity, with easy access to world-class skiing, hiking, climbing, and cycling in the nearby Rockies. Denver International Airport is one of the largest airports in the United States, providing excellent domestic and international connectivity.

The University of Denver and the University of Colorado Denver are among the major academic institutions in the city. Denver's combination of natural beauty, economic vitality, cultural richness, and outdoor recreation makes it one of the most sought-after cities in the United States and one of North America's most dynamic urban destinations.
