Derby stands in the East Midlands of England, on the River Derwent where the flat farmland of the Trent valley meets the rising hills of the Peak District. It is a compact city, easy to explore on foot, with a medieval street pattern at its heart, riverside parks and a ring of Victorian and modern suburbs. Open countryside begins within a few minutes drive, which has long made Derby a gateway to some of the finest landscapes in England.

Around two hundred and sixty thousand people live in the city. Its global importance is industrial, because Derby is one of the great engineering centres of Britain. Rolls Royce designs and builds aero engines here, the works at Litchurch Lane form the largest train manufacturing plant in the country, and Toyota has a major car factory on the edge of the city, giving the local economy an unusually high concentration of advanced manufacturing and research.

The Romans built a fort called Derventio beside the river, and Viking settlers gave the town its name and made it one of the five boroughs of the Danelaw. Its decisive moment came in 1721, when a silk mill powered by the Derwent began operating on an island in the river. Widely regarded as the first true factory in the world, it inspired the mills of the valley upstream and helped to launch the industrial revolution, a heritage now recognised by the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The town also produced fine porcelain from 1750, and the arrival of the railway in 1839 made it a national rail hub. Derby received city status in 1977.

The original silk mill now houses the Museum of Making, where three centuries of local invention are displayed alongside a complete aero engine. Derby Cathedral has one of the tallest perpendicular towers in the country, and the peregrine falcons nesting on it are watched online by thousands of people each spring. The Museum and Art Gallery holds the world's finest collection of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby, the eighteenth century master of candlelight and scientific subjects. Markeaton and Darley parks, the cast iron market hall and the Georgian streets around Friar Gate all repay a visit.

The city has a lively pub culture and an outstanding reputation for real ale, with historic inns and modern craft brewers side by side. Theatres, an arena, a strong live music scene and Derby County football club at Pride Park sustain a busy calendar, while the Caribbean carnival and other festivals reflect a genuinely diverse population drawn from South Asia, the Caribbean, Poland and beyond.

Fast trains reach London in about ninety minutes, and the city sits close to the motorway network and East Midlands Airport. The University of Derby, together with a large further education college, brings students into the centre and supports the engineering industries around it.

Derby combines industrial achievement, accessible history and easy access to the Peak District, which makes it both a serious working city and a comfortable base for visitors.
