Current Time in Dessie, Ethiopia

Dessie lies in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, in the Amhara Region, at an altitude of around two and a half thousand metres above sea level. The town is built along a valley between steep ridges, with the peak of Tossa rising above it, and the main road linking Addis Ababa with the far north runs directly through the centre. The height gives it a temperate climate, cool and often misty, very different from the hot lowlands that begin only a short distance to the east.

Something over two hundred thousand people live in Dessie, which is the principal urban centre of the South Wollo area and one of the largest towns in northern Ethiopia. It functions as a market, transport and service hub for a wide farming region, and it has long been a meeting point between the highland cultivators and the pastoralists of the Afar lowlands.

The town was founded in the early 1880s by Emperor Yohannes IV, who established a camp here during a campaign in the region. According to tradition he saw a comet in the night sky and took it as a favourable omen, giving the place a name meaning my joy. Dessie grew as the seat of the rulers of Wollo, and in the twentieth century it became one of the first Ethiopian towns to have a modern hospital and schools. Italian forces occupied it from 1936 to 1941 and left roads and buildings still in use. In recent decades it has expanded rapidly, though the conflict in northern Ethiopia during 2021 and 2022 disrupted life severely before recovery began.

Attractions are found mainly in the setting and the surrounding country. A road and footpath climb Tossa mountain for a wide view over the town and the valleys beyond. About thirty kilometres to the north lies Lake Hayq, a beautiful highland lake rich in birdlife, with the ancient monastery of Hayq Estifanos on its shore, one of the oldest monastic foundations in the country. The historic church site of Boru Meda, where an important religious council met in 1878, is close by, and rock hewn churches and dramatic escarpments lie within reach for those travelling further.

Dessie is known for the peaceful coexistence of its Orthodox Christian and Muslim communities, whose churches and mosques stand close together and whose festivals punctuate the year. The market is the social heart of the town, selling grain, spices, livestock, honey and woven cotton. Coffee ceremonies, the distinctive music of the Wollo tradition and meals of injera with spiced stews shape everyday life.

Buses and trucks run constantly along the highway to Addis Ababa, Mekelle and the trade routes towards Djibouti, and the neighbouring town of Combolcha has an airport and an industrial park. Wollo University maintains a large campus in Dessie, with medicine and the health sciences among its best known faculties.

Dessie is a lively highland town that offers travellers mountain landscapes, deep religious history and a genuine sense of everyday Ethiopian life.
