Dezhou
Dezhou is a prefecture-level city located in the northwestern part of Shandong Province in eastern China, situated on the North China Plain near the border with Hebei Province. With a population of approximately 5.7 million across the prefecture and around 500,000 in the urban core, Dezhou is an important transportation junction and agricultural-industrial center in the region. The city sits along the Beijing-Jinan axis, making it a historically and logistically significant waypoint between China's capital and the Shandong Peninsula.
Dezhou has a history stretching back over two thousand years. The city developed as a significant stopping point on the ancient Grand Canal — one of China's great engineering achievements, the world's longest artificial waterway — which passed through or near the area and facilitated commerce between northern and southern China. This canal connection made Dezhou a prosperous trading center in the Tang, Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, when merchants, officials, and goods moving between Beijing and the Yangtze River valley passed through the city.
Dezhou is nationally famous for its distinctive braised chicken, known as Dezhou braised chicken (德州扒鸡, Dézhōu pájī). This dish — whole chickens braised with a complex blend of spices until tender and fragrant — has been produced in Dezhou for centuries and gained nationwide fame when it became a popular railway food sold at Dezhou Station. Today Dezhou braised chicken is one of China's most recognized regional food products, sold across the country and considered a culinary symbol of the city.
Agriculture is a significant sector of the Dezhou economy. The fertile North China Plain surrounding the city is one of China's most important areas for wheat and cotton production. Agro-processing industries have developed around these agricultural outputs. Manufacturing — including textiles, machinery, chemicals, and solar energy equipment — has also grown in significance.
Dezhou has gained attention as a center of solar energy development, with a concentration of solar energy equipment manufacturers and renewable energy companies. The city has positioned itself as a "Solar City" and invested in solar energy applications in buildings and urban infrastructure, contributing to China's national renewable energy transition.
Dezhou is excellently connected, sitting on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway corridor and the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway. This central position on China's most important north-south transportation axis ensures a continuous flow of commerce and passengers through the city, maintaining its ancient role as a key waypoint along the spine of eastern China.
