Dĩ An is a city located in Bình Dương Province in southeastern Vietnam, positioned on the northern outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City within the broader Hồ Chí Minh City Metropolitan Region. Until 2020, Dĩ An was an urban district (thị xã) before being elevated to city status, reflecting its rapid urbanization and growing administrative importance. With a population exceeding 400,000 people, the city has experienced explosive growth driven by its position as a major industrial and commercial satellite of Vietnam's largest metropolis.

Dĩ An's transformation from a largely rural area into a bustling industrial city has been one of the most striking examples of Vietnam's post-Đổi Mới economic development. Since the 1990s, when Vietnam opened its economy to foreign investment, the city and surrounding Bình Dương Province became a primary destination for manufacturing investment from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and other countries. Industrial parks and export processing zones established in the area attracted hundreds of factories producing electronics, textiles, footwear, and consumer goods, creating a massive wave of migration from rural provinces across Vietnam.

Bình Dương Province, within which Dĩ An is situated, is known for its traditional lacquerware and furniture industries. While modern manufacturing dominates the economy, artisanal production of lacquer products — an art form with deep roots in Vietnamese culture — continues in workshops across the region and contributes to the cultural and commercial identity of the broader province. The Bình Dương Museum in nearby Thủ Dầu Một preserves and exhibits the province's historical and cultural heritage.

Infrastructure in Dĩ An has developed rapidly alongside its economic expansion. The city is connected to Ho Chi Minh City by Metro Line 1, which links it to the Bến Thành station in the city center, dramatically improving daily commuting. Major highways and an expanding road network support the logistics needs of the industrial zones.
