Dnipro

Dnipro, formerly known as Dnipropetrovsk (and before that Yekaterinoslav), is the fourth-largest city in Ukraine, located in the east-central part of the country on the banks of the Dnipro River. With a population of approximately 1 million, the city is the administrative center of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and one of Ukraine's most important industrial and commercial centers. Strategically positioned on the great bend of the Dnipro River, the city has served as an industrial, scientific, and now strategic-military hub of enormous national importance.

The city was founded in 1776 by order of Catherine the Great and named Yekaterinoslav (Catherine's Glory). It was renamed Dnipropetrovsk in 1926 during the Soviet era, in honor of Soviet leader Grigory Petrovsky. For decades, the city was a closed city due to its critical role in Soviet rocket and space industry production — the Yuzhnoye Design Office and Yuzhmash (Southern Machine Building Plant) produced a large proportion of Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles, a legacy that continues today in the form of satellite and space launch vehicle manufacturing.

The Dnipro River forms a dramatic backdrop to the city. The wide river with its sandy banks and islands creates a scenic urban waterfront that has been developed with parks and promenades. The Monastyrsky Island in the middle of the river is a large recreational area with parks and beaches accessible by boat. The embankment along the river is one of the longest and most beautiful in Ukraine, stretching for over 23 kilometers.

The Dnipro Historical Museum houses extensive collections related to the region's history, and the Dnipropetrovsk Art Museum has a significant collection of Ukrainian and European paintings. The city has a number of theatres, including the Dnipropetrovsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, which has maintained a high artistic standard throughout its history. The Menorah Center, one of the largest Jewish community centers in the world, reflects Dnipro's significant Jewish heritage and the city's important role in modern Jewish cultural life.

Dnipro has historically been a center of industry and engineering, with significant enterprises in metallurgy, machine building, and chemical production. The city also hosts several universities and research institutes that have made it a center of technical education and innovation in Ukraine.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Dnipro has taken on heightened strategic importance as a city relatively close to the eastern front lines that has continued to function and serve as a logistics and support hub. The city's resilience and its people's determination to maintain normal life while supporting the defense of Ukraine have become emblematic of Ukraine's national resistance. With its historical depth, industrial significance, beautiful riverside setting, and wartime resilience, Dnipro is a city of profound importance in the life of modern Ukraine.
