Dumai is a port city on the east coast of Sumatra, in Riau Province, Indonesia. It faces the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with the Malaysian coast lying only a few hours away across the water. The surrounding landscape is flat and low, a mixture of peat swamp, mangrove forest and vast plantations, and the city itself stretches along the shoreline where deep water allows large vessels to berth close to shore.

About three hundred and forty thousand people live in Dumai, drawn from across Indonesia. Malays form the historic population, joined over the decades by Javanese, Batak, Minangkabau and Chinese Indonesian communities, giving the city a mixed and outward-looking character. Its national importance is straightforward: Dumai is one of Indonesia's principal energy and commodity ports. Crude oil piped from the interior of Sumatra is processed at a large refinery here, and enormous quantities of palm oil, rubber, coal and timber products pass through its terminals on their way to world markets.

The place began as a small fishing village whose name, according to local tradition, comes from a legend about a princess and a spring. It remained obscure until the mid-twentieth century, when the discovery and development of the Minas and Duri oil fields inland made a coastal export terminal essential. A pipeline and refinery were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and the settlement grew rapidly around them. Dumai was administratively separated from Bengkalis and granted city status in 1999, since when it has continued to expand.

Dumai is a working city rather than a tourist centre, but it has attractions of its own. The waterfront and the ferry terminal are lively places where passengers board fast boats to Melaka and Port Klang in Malaysia, a route long used by traders and migrant workers. Beaches such as Pantai Teluk Makmur and Pantai Purnama offer shallow water and food stalls, while the Mangrove Ecotourism Park north of the centre protects an important coastal ecosystem with wooden walkways among the roots. The Grand Mosque and the Chinese temples reflect the city's religious diversity, and the traditional Malay houses in older districts recall its origins.

Local life revolves around markets, seafood and a strong Malay culinary tradition of spicy fish curries, sago dishes and grilled catch from the strait. Cultural performances of traditional dance and zapin music appear at festivals, and the fasting month and Eid celebrations shape the calendar. The city has also faced serious environmental challenges, particularly the haze produced when peatland and plantation fires burn during dry seasons, an issue that affects the whole region.

Transport reflects the city's function. The port handles international cargo and passenger ferries, Pinang Kampai Airport offers domestic flights, and roads and a toll motorway connect Dumai to Pekanbaru, the provincial capital, about two hundred kilometres south. Several universities and polytechnics, focused on maritime studies, engineering and business, serve local students.

Dumai matters because of what passes through it. As a gateway between Sumatra's resources and the shipping lanes of Asia, it is a compact, energetic city that shows how trade shapes modern Indonesia.
