Duque de Caxias
Duque de Caxias is a major city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, located in the Baixada Fluminense region approximately 15 kilometres north of Rio de Janeiro city centre. Named after Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias and one of Brazil's most celebrated military heroes, the city occupies a flat lowland area between the Guanabara Bay and the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range. It is part of the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area and is among the most industrially significant cities in all of Brazil.
Duque de Caxias has a population of approximately 900,000 to one million people, making it the third-largest city in Rio de Janeiro state after the capital and São Gonçalo. Its residents are predominantly working-class and lower-middle-class Brazilians, with a population that is ethnically diverse, reflecting decades of migration from the Northeast, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo. The Baixada Fluminense as a whole is known for its dense, energetic working-class culture and its deep roots in popular Brazilian music and religion.
The area's history begins in the colonial period when Portuguese settlers established sugar plantations and cattle ranches in the Iguaçu River lowlands. During the 19th century, the region developed further with the construction of the Leopoldina Railway, which linked the interior to the port of Rio de Janeiro. The municipality of Duque de Caxias was officially created in 1943, during the Estado Novo period under President Getúlio Vargas. The mid-20th century brought explosive industrial growth, especially with the construction of the President Bernardes Oil Refinery (REDUC) by Petrobras in 1961, which became the city's economic anchor.
Duque de Caxias is not traditionally regarded as a tourist destination, but it holds points of cultural and industrial interest. The REDUC refinery complex, one of the most important in Brazil, can be observed from the surrounding area. The Praça do Pacificador in the city centre and the historic Igreja do Pilar offer glimpses into local heritage. The surrounding natural environment includes stretches of Guanabara Bay coastline and fragments of the Atlantic Forest in the hillier northern districts of the municipality.
Culturally, Duque de Caxias is deeply embedded in the Carioca popular music tradition. Funk carioca, samba, and pagode all have strong expressions in the city's communities and neighbourhoods. The city is also known as a centre of Afro-Brazilian religious practice, particularly Candomblé and Umbanda, which are woven into the social fabric of many neighbourhoods. Community organisations, cultural associations, and schools play a vital role in preserving and transmitting these traditions.
Transport infrastructure is significant in Duque de Caxias. The Washington Luís Highway (BR-040) and the Presidente Dutra Highway (BR-116) pass through the municipality, as does the Linha Vermelha expressway providing direct access to central Rio de Janeiro. The Supervia commuter rail network connects the city to Rio's central station and to other Baixada municipalities. These connections make Duque de Caxias an important transit and logistics corridor for the broader metropolitan region.
Educational institutions in Duque de Caxias include the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Duque de Caxias campus and various state and municipal universities and technical schools. The city's educational infrastructure has grown considerably, reflecting the demands of a large and youthful population.
Economically, Duque de Caxias is dominated by the oil and gas refining sector, petrochemicals, logistics, and retail trade. The REDUC refinery and the surrounding industrial complex make the city one of the highest generators of industrial tax revenue (ICMS) in Rio de Janeiro state, underpinning significant public investment in services and infrastructure. Duque de Caxias stands as a compelling example of Brazil's industrial heartland, combining enormous economic output with the vibrant, resilient culture of its working-class communities.
