Durango is a historic mountain city located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, United States, along the banks of the Animas River. With a population of approximately 20,000 inhabitants, it serves as the county seat of La Plata County and functions as the regional hub for a vast area of the Colorado Plateau and Rocky Mountain Southwest. Durango is internationally known for the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, one of the most spectacular heritage railway experiences in North America, and for its exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities in the surrounding national forests and mesa country.

The journey through the San Juan Mountains, climbing from 1,980 meters at Durango to 2,835 meters at Silverton, takes approximately three and a half hours each way.

Mesa Verde National Park, located approximately 60 kilometers west of Durango, is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park contains over 5,000 known archaeological sites of the Ancestral Puebloan people, including approximately 600 cliff dwellings. The Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America with 150 rooms and 23 kivas, and Balcony House are the most accessible and impressive examples of these extraordinary architectural achievements. The Ancestral Puebloans inhabited the mesa and its canyons from approximately 600 to 1300 AD before mysteriously abandoning their settlements.

The Animas River that flows through the heart of Durango provides both recreational opportunities and a scenic element in the urban landscape. The River Trail connects much of the city and offers walking and cycling routes along the riverbanks. Kayaking and whitewater rafting on the Animas, mountain biking on the extensive trail networks in the surrounding national forest, skiing at the nearby Purgatory Resort in winter, and hiking to mountain lakes and peaks in summer make Durango one of the most complete outdoor recreation destinations in the American West.

The historic downtown of Durango, centered on Main Avenue, retains a remarkably authentic character with Victorian and early 20th-century commercial buildings, independent restaurants, breweries, galleries, and shops. The city has a thriving craft beer scene, with several excellent local breweries. Fort Lewis College, situated on a mesa above the city, contributes to the academic and cultural life of the community.
