Durg

Durg stands on the banks of the Shivnath River in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, on a plain of black soil and rice fields about thirty kilometres west of the state capital, Raipur. The city is the headquarters of Durg district and forms the western half of a large twin settlement with the planned steel town of Bhilai, the two merging into a single urban corridor along the highway and railway. Summers are hot and dry, followed by a heavy monsoon that turns the surrounding countryside a brilliant green.

The city itself has a population of around three hundred thousand, while the wider Durg and Bhilai agglomeration exceeds a million people, making it the largest urban area in Chhattisgarh. Its importance rests on steel, cement and engineering, above all the vast Bhilai Steel Plant next door, one of the earliest and most productive public sector steelworks in India, along with the trade in rice from a region often called the rice bowl of the country.

The name Durg means fort, a reminder of the stronghold that once guarded this stretch of the old Deccan trade routes. The area formed part of ancient Dakshina Kosala and was later governed by the Kalachuri rulers of Ratanpur, whose temples survive in villages nearby. Under British administration Durg became a district town and a stop on the main railway between Mumbai and Kolkata. The decisive change came in the 1950s, when a steel plant built with Soviet cooperation rose at Bhilai and drew engineers and workers from every corner of India, transforming a quiet market town into an industrial centre.

Visitors usually begin with the temples of the district. The medieval stone temple at Deobaloda, carved with dancers and mythological scenes, is the finest historical monument in the area, while the Ganga Maiya temple at Jhalmala and the Uwassaggaharam Parshwa Padmavati Dham, a marble Jain temple complex, attract steady streams of pilgrims. In neighbouring Bhilai, the Maitri Bagh park and zoo, created as a symbol of Indian and Russian friendship, offers gardens, a lake, a toy train and a musical fountain that draw families in the evenings.

Local life mixes industrial routine with the folk traditions of Chhattisgarh, including panthi and raut nacha dances performed at festivals, and food built around rice, lentils, chana and sweets such as khurmi and thethri. Markets in the old town sell brassware, textiles and produce from the surrounding villages.

Durg Junction is a major stop on the Howrah to Mumbai railway, national highways pass through the city, and Raipur airport lies within an hour by road. The city hosts Hemchand Yadav University, several long-established colleges and technical institutes, with an Indian Institute of Technology campus in Bhilai adding to the region's academic standing.

Durg is best understood as the working heart of Chhattisgarh, where old temple traditions sit alongside one of the most important industrial complexes in India.
