E’zhou
E'zhou (also written as Ezhou) is a prefecture-level city located in the southeastern part of Hubei Province in central China, situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River. With a population of approximately 1.1 million, it is one of the smaller prefecture-level cities in Hubei but holds considerable strategic significance due to its position on the Yangtze River corridor and its proximity to the provincial capital Wuhan, which lies approximately 80 kilometers to the west. The city's compact size relative to its neighbors belies its historical depth and growing economic importance.
E'zhou is one of China's historically significant ancient cities. The area was known in antiquity as Wuchang (a name that now refers to a district of Wuhan) and was the capital of the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 CE). Sun Quan, the founder of the Eastern Wu Kingdom and one of the three great rulers of the Three Kingdoms era, established his capital here briefly before relocating to Jianye (present-day Nanjing). The city's deep connection to the Three Kingdoms period — one of the most romanticized eras in Chinese history — gives E'zhou cultural resonance throughout China.
The Yangtze River, flowing along the city's northern edge, is both a defining geographical feature and an economic artery. E'zhou has river port facilities that support industrial and commercial logistics, and the river provides a scenic backdrop for the city's waterfront areas. The Yangtze Bridge at E'zhou is an important transportation infrastructure link connecting the city across the river.
E'zhou's most significant contemporary development is the construction of the Ezhou Huahu Airport, which opened in 2022 as China's first professional cargo airport — a dedicated air freight hub designed to handle massive volumes of express parcel and logistics cargo. The airport was built in partnership with SF Express, China's largest express delivery company, and is intended to become a major hub in the Asian and global air logistics network. This development has transformed E'zhou's economic profile, positioning it as a critical node in China's rapidly growing e-commerce and logistics supply chain.
E'zhou is connected to Wuhan and other Hubei cities by expressways and railway, with ongoing infrastructure improvements enhancing regional connectivity. Several universities and technical colleges serve the city's educational needs.
E'zhou's remarkable transformation from a historically significant ancient city to the home of China's first dedicated cargo airport represents a compelling story of continuity and change — a small city on the Yangtze where ancient history and cutting-edge logistics infrastructure coexist on the banks of China's most storied river.
