Efon-Alaaye is a Yoruba town in Ekiti State, in the south-western part of Nigeria, set among some of the highest hills in the region. The surrounding country is a rolling landscape of granite outcrops, forested slopes and deep valleys, and the elevation gives the town a fresher climate than much of the lowland south. Streams and waterfalls run through the hills, and the fertile soils support dense cultivation right up to the edge of the built-up area.

Around two hundred thousand people live in the town and its farming hinterland, making it one of the larger settlements in Ekiti State. The economy rests firmly on agriculture, with cocoa as the principal cash crop alongside kola nut, oil palm, plantain, yam, cassava, maize and vegetables. Trading in the busy markets, transport, small-scale manufacturing, teaching and the crafts occupy much of the remaining population, and remittances from people who have moved to Lagos and abroad play a significant role.

Efon-Alaaye traces its origins to migrations from Ile-Ife, the spiritual home of the Yoruba, and its traditional ruler carries the title of Alaaye, a name that reflects an ancient claim to seniority among Yoruba kings. The town developed as an independent kingdom with its own palace, chieftaincy institutions and shrines. It suffered during the Yoruba civil wars of the nineteenth century, when populations across the region were displaced, and was later reoccupied and rebuilt. Christian missions and colonial administration in the twentieth century brought schools, churches and cocoa farming on a large scale, and the town became a local government headquarters after Ekiti State was created in 1996.

Efon-Alaaye is celebrated above all for woodcarving. Families of carvers here produced house posts, doors, masks, divination trays and figures of extraordinary quality, and works from the town are held in museums in Nigeria, Europe and North America. The tradition continues in workshops where craftsmen still shape iroko and other hardwoods with adze and chisel. Visitors also come to see the palace of the Alaaye with its carved verandah posts, the hilltop viewpoints over the surrounding country, and the waterfalls and rock formations of the neighbouring Ekiti highlands, including the well-known Arinta falls a short distance away.

Cultural life follows the Yoruba calendar of festivals, with drumming, masquerade performances, praise poetry and ceremonies honouring the ancestors and the town's founding, alongside the strong presence of Christian and Muslim communities that coexist comfortably. Local food features pounded yam with vegetable soups, bushmeat, palm wine and roasted plantain.

Roads connect Efon-Alaaye with Ado-Ekiti, Ilesha and Akure, with shared taxis and minibuses providing daily transport. Secondary schools, teacher training and technical colleges serve the town, and universities in Ado-Ekiti and Akure are within easy reach.

Efon-Alaaye is valued for its ancient kingship, its hill scenery and its outstanding contribution to Yoruba sculpture.
