Eger
Eger is a historic city located in the Northern Hungary Mountains, in the valley of the Eger Stream at the southern edge of the Bükk Hills. With a population of approximately 55,000, it serves as the administrative center of Heves County. Known for its striking Baroque architecture, thermal baths, and world-famous wines, Eger is one of Hungary's most beloved and visited cities, offering a remarkably rich combination of history, culture, and natural beauty.
The city's most celebrated chapter in history dates from 1552, when a vastly outnumbered Hungarian garrison of roughly 2,000 soldiers, led by Captain István Dobó, held off an Ottoman army estimated at over 40,000 troops for 38 days before forcing their withdrawal. This legendary defense of Eger Castle became one of the defining events in Hungarian national mythology, immortalized in Géza Gárdonyi's beloved novel Egri Csillagok (Eclipse of the Crescent Moon). The Ottomans eventually captured the city in 1596 and held it for nearly a century, leaving behind a distinctive minaret — the northernmost surviving Ottoman minaret in Europe — which still stands today.
Eger Castle, perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, is the most visited historical monument in the region. Its museum complex contains extensive exhibits on the 1552 siege, Hungarian medieval life, and the archaeology of the region. Below the castle, the city's Baroque old town is a remarkably well-preserved ensemble of palaces, churches, and civic buildings that earned Eger the reputation of being Hungary's most beautiful Baroque city. The Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral of Eger — the second-largest church in Hungary — and the elegant streets radiating from the central square all contribute to an architectural grandeur that belies the city's modest size.
Eger is internationally renowned for its wines, particularly the red blend known as Egri Bikavér, or Bull's Blood. According to legend, Hungarian defenders drank so much of this deep-red wine before battle that their enemies believed they had been drinking bulls' blood. Today the wine region produces a wide variety of excellent reds and whites. The Szépasszony-völgy, or Valley of Beautiful Women, located just outside the city, is lined with dozens of wine cellars carved into the volcanic rock where visitors can taste and purchase local wines directly from producers in a charming and convivial atmosphere.
The city is also famous for its thermal baths. The Eger Thermal Bath is a large spa complex offering pools of naturally heated mineral water, wellness facilities, and outdoor swimming areas that attract visitors year-round. The geothermal waters of the region have been used for therapeutic purposes for centuries, including during the Ottoman period, when several hammams were constructed.
Eger is home to Eszterházy Károly University, which traces its roots to a Jesuit college founded in 1740. The institution plays an important role in the cultural and intellectual life of the city and the broader region. The city's transport connections include regular rail and bus services to Budapest, approximately 140 kilometers to the southwest, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors.
With its heroic past, magnificent architecture, excellent wines, and welcoming atmosphere, Eger stands as a quintessential Hungarian city — proud of its heritage and generous in sharing it with the world. It is a destination that consistently exceeds expectations and leaves visitors with a deep appreciation for Hungary's history and culture.
