El Daein
El Daein lies in the west of Sudan, on the open savanna of southern Darfur, and serves as the capital of East Darfur state. The town stands on sandy soil among acacia woodland and seasonal watercourses, in the belt of country known as the land of the Baggara, the cattle-herding Arab peoples of the region. Rain falls in a single short season between June and September, turning the grass brilliant green, while for the rest of the year the landscape is dry and dusty under a fierce sun.
The population is estimated at well over two hundred thousand, swollen in recent years by people displaced from the surrounding countryside. El Daein is the administrative centre of the state and the principal market for a vast pastoral hinterland, dealing above all in cattle, sheep, camels and goats, and also in gum arabic tapped from acacia trees, sesame, groundnuts and millet. Its livestock markets supply animals that are driven and trucked to Omdurman and exported towards Egypt and the Gulf.
The town grew as a trading post and station on the caravan routes that crossed Darfur between the Nile valley and Central Africa. Its modern importance dates from the building of the railway from Khartoum through Kordofan to Nyala in the middle of the twentieth century, which gave it a station and made it a collecting point for the region's produce. The area is the home territory of the Rizeigat, one of the largest cattle-owning groups in Sudan, and its recent history has been shaped by the conflicts that engulfed Darfur from 2003 onwards and by the fighting that spread across the country after 2023, which has brought displacement, humanitarian operations and great hardship.
El Daein has no ancient monuments, and its interest lies instead in the life of the surrounding region. The great cattle markets, held on fixed days and attended by thousands of herders, are a spectacle in themselves. Camel and horse racing, wrestling and displays of horsemanship accompany weddings and festivals, and the poetry, drumming and singing of the Baggara tradition remain strong. The countryside beyond the town shows the seasonal migration of herds northwards and southwards with the rains, a pattern followed for centuries.
Daily life centres on family, mosque and market. Food is simple and hearty, with sorghum porridge, stews of dried meat and okra, camel and cow milk, and strong sweet tea and coffee prepared with ginger and cardamom over charcoal. Hospitality towards travellers is a deeply held value.
The railway, when running, links the town to Nyala and the Nile valley, roads cross the savanna to the other Darfur capitals and to the border with South Sudan, and a small airport handles limited flights and relief operations. A state university was established in the town, and secondary schools and teacher training colleges serve the region.
El Daein is important as the commercial and administrative heart of eastern Darfur, a pastoral society whose herds have long supplied a large part of Sudan.
