El Fasher

El Fasher lies in the west of Sudan, capital of the state of North Darfur, on a sandy plain at the northern edge of the Darfur savanna where the grasslands give way to the Sahara. It stands at around seven hundred metres above sea level beside a seasonal watercourse that fills a large pool in the rainy season, and the Jebel Marra volcanic massif rises to the south-west. Rainfall is sparse and confined to a few summer months, and dust storms sweep the town in spring.

Population estimates vary widely, but several hundred thousand people have lived in and around the city in recent years, a figure swollen by displacement from the surrounding countryside. Livestock is the traditional foundation of the economy, with cattle, camels, sheep and goats traded in large markets, alongside millet, sorghum, groundnuts and gum arabic harvested from acacia trees. Craft work in leather, silver and basketry has a long reputation, and trade, administration and the presence of aid organisations account for much of the salaried employment.

The name El Fasher means the courtyard or seat of the sultan, and the city owes its existence to that role. In the late eighteenth century Sultan Abd al-Rahman moved the capital of the Sultanate of Darfur here, choosing the site for its water. Darfur was an independent Muslim state for centuries, controlling the western end of the Forty Days Road, the great caravan route across the desert to Egypt along which slaves, ivory, ostrich feathers and gum were carried. The sultanate was conquered by Egypt, restored, and finally annexed to Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in 1916 after the death of its last ruler, Ali Dinar. From 2003 the region was devastated by conflict, and El Fasher became a base for African Union and United Nations peacekeepers and a refuge for displaced families. The civil war that broke out in Sudan in 2023 brought further and severe fighting to the city.

The palace built by Sultan Ali Dinar early in the twentieth century, a distinctive building of red brick and arcades, houses the regional museum and is the most important monument in Darfur, holding royal regalia, weapons, manuscripts and ethnographic collections. The old mosque, the sultan's tombs and the market with its camel and livestock sections give a sense of the historic town, while the pool at the heart of the city, surrounded by trees, remains its defining feature. The mountains and crater lakes of Jebel Marra, with orchards and waterfalls in a landscape quite unlike the surrounding plain, are the natural highlight of the region.

Darfur is home to many peoples, among them the Fur, Zaghawa, Berti and Arab pastoral groups, and Arabic serves as the shared language alongside local tongues. The University of El Fasher, founded in 1990, together with teacher training and technical colleges, made the city a centre of education for the whole region. An airport and long desert roads towards Khartoum and Chad provide its links.

El Fasher is important as the historic capital of Darfur and as the administrative and cultural heart of western Sudan.
