El Paso

El Paso is a major city located at the western tip of Texas, on the Rio Grande at the point where Texas, New Mexico, and the Mexican state of Chihuahua meet. With a population of approximately 680,000, El Paso is the fifth-largest city in Texas and one of the largest on the United States-Mexico border. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters in the Chihuahuan Desert, El Paso and its Mexican sister city, Ciudad Juárez — together forming a binational metropolitan area of over 2.5 million people — represent one of the world's largest international border communities.

The pass in the Rio Grande at this location — El Paso del Norte, "the pass of the north" — has been a strategic crossing point since ancient times. Spanish conquistadors traversed the pass in the 16th century, and it became a key route on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, connecting Mexico City to the northern frontier. The area was settled permanently in the late 17th century, and the border region remained part of Mexico until the Mexican-American War resulted in its transfer to the United States in 1848. The international bridge over the Rio Grande at El Paso-Juárez is one of the busiest border crossings in the world.

El Paso has a distinctive character as a majority-Hispanic city deeply integrated with Mexican culture across the river. Over 80% of residents are of Hispanic heritage, and the city has a bilingual, bicultural character unlike almost anywhere else in the United States. The Mission Trail — a heritage route connecting three Spanish colonial missions dating from the 17th century — is among the most historically significant cultural attractions in West Texas. The El Paso Museum of Art and the El Paso Museum of History document the region's layered cultural heritage.

The Franklin Mountains State Park, located within the city limits, is the largest urban state park in the United States, offering hiking, rock climbing, and scenic views of the Rio Grande valley and the sprawling binational city below. The natural desert landscape surrounding El Paso, with its dramatic mountain silhouettes and wide open skies, gives the city a striking and memorable physical setting.

Fort Bliss, one of the largest U.S. Army installations in the country, is a major employer in El Paso, contributing significantly to the local economy. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), housed in distinctive Bhutanese-style architecture on the border of the Rio Grande, serves the city's large student population. The El Paso International Airport connects the city to major U.S. destinations.

El Paso's unique position as a cultural bridge between the United States and Mexico, its deep Spanish colonial heritage, its military significance, and its dramatic desert mountain setting make it one of the most distinctive and fascinating cities in the American Southwest.
