Espoo
Espoo lies on the Gulf of Finland immediately west of Helsinki and is the second largest city in Finland, with around three hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants. It is an unusual place: rather than one downtown it has five separate urban centres, and between them stretch forests, lakes, farmland and a long, indented coastline with hundreds of islands. Roughly half of the city's area is green space, and elk, foxes and flying squirrels live within its boundaries.
Espoo was a rural parish for centuries, and its oldest building, a stone church with medieval wall paintings, dates from the late fifteenth century. Growth came only after the Second World War, when Helsinki overflowed westward. The most famous result is Tapiola, a garden city begun in the 1950s and laid out among pine trees and rock outcrops, with modernist apartment blocks, a central pool and fountain, and an emphasis on light, greenery and social mixing that made it internationally influential in urban planning.
The city's identity today is bound up with technology and research. The Otaniemi district holds the main campus of Aalto University, formed in 2010 from the merger of Finland's leading schools of technology, business and art. Much of the campus was designed by Alvar Aalto himself, including the red brick main building with its fan-shaped auditorium, and it is joined by the Dipoli student centre and the sculptural Otaniemi chapel among the pines. Around the university cluster the national technical research centre, dozens of laboratories and a startup community that produced some of Finland's best known technology companies. Nearby Keilaniemi contains the headquarters of major corporations in telecommunications, energy and lift manufacturing, and the mobile games industry has a strong presence.
Culture is concentrated at the WeeGee centre, a converted printing works that houses EMMA, the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, one of the largest art museums in Finland, along with several smaller museums. The Espoo Cultural Centre in Tapiola hosts concerts and the city's orchestra, and summer brings a well-regarded jazz festival by the sea.
Nature is never far away. Nuuksio National Park, a landscape of lakes, mossy boulders and old-growth spruce forest, begins within the city limits and is the closest national park to the capital, with the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia at its edge. The coast offers marinas, swimming beaches, ice skating in winter and a scenic archipelago, and there are extensive networks of walking, cycling and cross-country skiing routes.
Transport is excellent. The Helsinki metro was extended west into Espoo in 2017 and again in 2022, commuter trains run along the coastal line, and a light rail service connects the technology district to Helsinki. The international airport is a short drive away.
Prosperous, highly educated and remarkably green, Espoo combines a leading research economy with easy access to Finnish nature.
