Current Time in Etāwah, India

Etawah stands on the south bank of the Yamuna River in the western part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, roughly midway between Agra and Kanpur. Around three hundred thousand people live in the city, which is the headquarters of Etawah district and the market centre for a farming region producing wheat, mustard, potatoes and pulses. Its most distinctive feature is the landscape south of the river, where the Chambal and its tributaries have cut the soft alluvial soil into a maze of deep gullies known as the ravines or badlands.

The town is old, with a fort site above the river and a history running through the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal empire, and it saw fighting during the rebellion of 1857. In the decades that followed, Etawah became known for an unusual colonial administrator: Allan Octavian Hume, later the founder of the Indian National Congress and a distinguished ornithologist, served as district officer here in the 1860s and made the district a model of schools, roads and municipal reform. The school he established still bears his name.

Etawah's best-known attraction today is the Safari Park, a large conservation and tourism project opened in stages and centred on the Asiatic lion, a species otherwise found only in Gujarat. Set in restored ravine country on the edge of the city, it also houses deer, bears and leopards in extensive enclosures and has become a major draw for visitors from across northern India. Beyond it lies the National Chambal Sanctuary, protecting one of the cleanest rivers in the plains and its remarkable wildlife: gharial and mugger crocodiles, Ganges river dolphins, softshell turtles and skimmers can all be seen on boat trips from riverside points in the district.

The old city has temples, mosques and stepped ghats along the Yamuna, and the confluence of five rivers nearby is a place of pilgrimage. Kali Vahan temple and the fort area overlook the water, and the district's villages preserve strong traditions of Braj and Bundeli folk song and wrestling.

Etawah district has played a notable part in modern Indian politics, and considerable public investment has followed, including a medical university and sports facilities at Saifai a short distance away.

Transport is a strength. Etawah Junction sits on the main Delhi to Howrah railway line with frequent trains in both directions, the Grand Trunk Road passes through, and the Agra to Lucknow expressway has an interchange here, putting Delhi and Lucknow within a few hours by road.

The local economy combines agriculture, dairying, grain trading, small-scale manufacturing and government employment, and the city has a growing number of colleges and coaching institutes.

With its lions, its river wildlife and its dramatic ravine country, Etawah offers something genuinely unusual in the Gangetic plain.
