Fanling lies in the northern New Territories of Hong Kong, on a low plain between wooded hills only a few kilometres from the boundary with mainland China at Shenzhen. It forms part of a new town shared with neighbouring Sheung Shui, and it sits in a landscape quite different from the harbour skyline most visitors picture, with village houses, fish ponds, vegetable plots and the green ridges of Pat Sin Leng rising to the east. The subtropical climate brings hot humid summers, typhoons in late summer and comfortably cool winters.

Together with Sheung Shui, the town houses around a quarter of a million people. Its importance is residential and strategic: it provides affordable public and private housing for families who commute into the urban core, and it stands on the main rail and road corridor to the border, making it a busy point of cross-boundary trade and travel.

Unlike most of Hong Kong, this area has a long settled history. Clans of the Pang and Tang families established walled villages here many centuries ago, farming the fertile plain and defending their land behind brick walls and watchtowers. Fanling Wai, the walled village at the heart of the town, still keeps its moat, gate and ancestral hall, while the Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail links a series of villages, temples and ancestral halls that record the life of these lineages under the Ming and Qing dynasties. British administration arrived with the lease of the New Territories in 1898, and the district remained rural until the 1970s, when the government built a new town of housing estates, schools and markets around the old settlements.

The most famous institution in Fanling is the golf course of the Hong Kong Golf Club, the oldest in the territory, whose three courses have hosted the Hong Kong Open for decades and provide a rare expanse of open green land. Luen Wo Hui, once a traditional market town, retains a covered market building of the 1950s that is a well-known example of post-war architecture. Temples such as those at Fung Ying Seen Koon, a large Taoist monastery with terraced gardens, ornamental ponds and a striking collection of ancestral halls, attract worshippers and visitors alike, particularly at Lunar New Year.

Beyond the town, the hills offer some of the finest walking in Hong Kong. Trails climb to the ridge of Pat Sin Leng with views towards the mainland and the sea, and the reservoirs at Hok Tau and Lau Shui Heung, the latter known as the mirror pond for its reflections of surrounding forest, are popular for weekend excursions. Village restaurants serve basin feasts, a traditional dish of layered meats and vegetables shared at celebrations.

Trains on the East Rail Line reach the city centre in about forty minutes and the border in a few, and highways link the town to the rest of the territory. Local secondary schools and colleges serve residents, with universities elsewhere in Hong Kong easily reached.

Fanling offers a rare combination of walled village heritage, countryside and everyday Hong Kong life away from the tourist districts.
