Faridabad
Faridabad is the largest city in the state of Haryana in northern India, located in the National Capital Region just south of New Delhi on the western bank of the Yamuna River. With a population of approximately 1.8 million in the city and over 2.2 million in the urban agglomeration, Faridabad is one of the most important industrial cities in northern India and plays a central role in the manufacturing economy of the Delhi metropolitan region.
Faridabad's origins are modest. According to local tradition, the city was founded in 1607 by Sheikh Farid, a treasurer of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who established a fort and a mosque to protect the imperial road. For much of its history, it remained a small market town on the outskirts of Delhi. Its transformation into a major industrial and urban center came only in the mid-20th century, when Partition refugees from what became Pakistan were resettled here and established small industries, laying the foundation for the city's manufacturing growth.
Today Faridabad is one of India's leading industrial centers, with a diverse economy encompassing the production of motorcycles, refrigerators, shoes, garments, tractors, and a wide range of engineering products. The city is one of the largest contributors to the revenue of Haryana state and is a significant center of small and medium enterprise activity. Industrial areas such as NIT, Old Faridabad, and Sector 58 through 65 contain thousands of factories and manufacturing units across a broad range of sectors.
The city's rapid growth has generated substantial urban and environmental challenges. Faridabad consistently ranks among the most polluted cities in India due to its dense concentration of industries and the broader air pollution issues affecting the Delhi NCR region. Efforts to improve air quality, urban planning, and infrastructure have been ongoing through various government initiatives.
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, held annually near Faridabad in early February, is one of the largest craft fairs in the world, drawing artisans from across India and abroad and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors over its two-week duration. The fair showcases traditional handicrafts, folk performances, and cuisine from different Indian states and has become a major cultural event for the entire Delhi NCR region.
Transportation in Faridabad is well integrated with the Delhi NCR network through the Delhi Metro Violet Line, which runs through the city and connects it to central Delhi and other metropolitan areas. National Highway 19 and the Agra Canal expressway provide important road connectivity.
Faridabad's role as a critical manufacturing hub within the Delhi NCR economy, combined with the cultural vibrancy of the Surajkund Mela and the city's strategic location within one of the world's most populous metropolitan areas, makes it an essential component of northern India's economic landscape.
