Feira de Santana
Feira de Santana is a dynamic and rapidly growing city located in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. Situated approximately 108 kilometers northeast of Salvador, the state capital, it occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of major highway routes connecting northeastern Brazil to the rest of the country. With a population of over 600,000 people, Feira de Santana is the second largest city in Bahia and one of the most important urban centers in the entire Northeast region.
The city owes its origins to the cattle trade that flourished in the colonial era. In the 18th century, a small settlement grew around a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and Saint Anne near a cattle trail. The weekly livestock fairs that developed here gave the city its name — Feira de Santana literally means "Fair of Saint Anne." The cattle market tradition remained central to the city's identity for centuries and continues to be celebrated in the city's culture and folklore today.
Feira de Santana is known as the "Princess of the Sertão," a nickname reflecting its role as a gateway between the humid coastal region of Bahia and the arid interior known as the sertão. The city serves as a major commercial and logistical hub, with its position along the BR-116, BR-324, and other federal highways making it one of the most important transit points in northeastern Brazil. Trucks and cargo passing through the city have helped sustain a robust commercial sector.
The city's economy is diverse, encompassing trade, industry, and services. The Centro Industrial do Subaé (CIS) is a major industrial district hosting companies in sectors including food processing, petrochemicals, metallurgy, and textiles. The city is also an important retail center, attracting shoppers from a wide surrounding area thanks to its large shopping malls and markets.
Culturally, Feira de Santana is celebrated for its Micareta, one of Brazil's most famous off-season Carnival festivals. Held in April, the Micareta draws enormous crowds and features elaborate blocos (street processions) with live axé music and samba. The event is one of the largest street festivals in Brazil outside of the official Carnival season and attracts visitors from across the country and abroad.
The city is home to the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), a respected public university that serves the educational needs of the region. The university supports research and professional training across a range of disciplines and contributes to the city's growing academic reputation. Several private universities and technical colleges also operate in the city.
With its vibrant commercial life, festive cultural spirit, and strategic location in the heart of Bahia, Feira de Santana is an essential urban engine of northeastern Brazil. Its growth shows no signs of slowing, and the city continues to attract investment and residents drawn by its economic opportunities and lively atmosphere.
