Fīrozābād
Fīrozābād lies in the western part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, on the flat alluvial plain between the Yamuna and the Ganges, about forty kilometres east of Agra. The countryside around it is intensively farmed with wheat, mustard and potatoes, and the climate follows the familiar pattern of the northern plains, with scorching summers, a humid monsoon and cool, misty winters.
The city has a population of roughly six hundred thousand and is known throughout India, and increasingly beyond it, as the capital of the glass bangle industry. Almost every household is connected in some way to the making, decorating, packing or trading of glass, and the city is often called Suhag Nagari, a name that links it to the bangles traditionally worn by married women.
Its origins date to the sixteenth century, when an officer in the service of the Mughal emperor Akbar established a settlement here and gave it his name. The wider area is older still, and the plains nearby were the scene of the battle of Chandawar in the late twelfth century, a decisive encounter that helped open northern India to the sultanate period. For much of its history the town was an unremarkable market centre on the road between Agra and the east, until glassmaking took hold in the nineteenth century and transformed it completely.
The glass trade began with small furnaces fired by wood and coal and grew into an enormous cluster of workshops and factories producing bangles in every imaginable colour, along with chandeliers, tumblers, decorative beads, scientific glassware and lighting components. Watching artisans draw molten glass from a furnace, coil it into rings and then join, cut and decorate each bangle by hand is an unforgettable experience, and the bustling bangle markets, where bundles glitter in stacks along narrow lanes, are the main attraction for visitors. In recent decades the industry has moved largely to natural gas, which has improved air quality and working conditions considerably.
The city itself is a working place rather than a monumental one, but it makes an excellent base for exploring the region. Agra with the Taj Mahal, the fort and Fatehpur Sikri is an easy trip, and Etawah, Mainpuri and the Chambal ravines lie within reach. Local temples, a Jain complex and the crowded bazaars around the clock tower give a strong sense of everyday north Indian life, and festivals such as Diwali and Holi are celebrated with particular energy in a city built on colour.
Fīrozābād stands on the main railway line between Delhi and Kolkata, with frequent services, and national highways and expressways link it to Agra, Lucknow and the capital. Cycle rickshaws, autorickshaws and buses handle local movement. Colleges affiliated with the regional university serve students from across the district.
Fīrozābād is important as the source of an ornament worn by millions of women across South Asia and as a rare example of a city defined by a single traditional craft.
