Fribourg is a medieval city and the capital of the canton of Fribourg in west-central Switzerland, situated approximately midway between the cities of Bern and Lausanne. With a population of around 38,000 in the city proper and over 100,000 in the broader urban area, Fribourg occupies a dramatically beautiful position on a sandstone peninsula almost completely enclosed by a deep meander of the Sarine (Saane) River. The city is one of the most distinctively bilingual in Switzerland, with French and German both recognized as official languages and used in everyday life, reflecting its position on the linguistic and cultural divide between the French-speaking (Romand) and German-speaking regions of the country.

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas), one of the finest Gothic cathedrals in Switzerland, dominates the upper town and the cityscape from its hilltop position. The cathedral's imposing facade, its magnificent carved tympanum depicting the Last Judgment, and its interior containing exceptional stained glass windows by the Expressionist artist Józef Mehoffer are major artistic attractions. The cathedral tower offers panoramic views over the medieval roofscape and the dramatic river gorge below. Adjacent to the cathedral, the Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) with its octagonal turret and exterior staircase is another architectural highlight.

The University of Fribourg, founded in 1889 as a Catholic university and bilingual from its inception, is one of the defining institutions of the city. With approximately 10,000 students, the university contributes significantly to the city's intellectual and cultural life, and its faculties of theology, law, and humanities maintain Fribourg's tradition as a center of Catholic intellectual culture. The Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire (Cantonal and University Library) houses important historical collections.

Fribourg is also the gateway to the Gruyères region, one of the most iconic landscapes in Switzerland. The medieval village of Gruyères, perched on a hilltop just 30 kilometers south of Fribourg, and the surrounding dairy farming country produce the famous Gruyère cheese, as well as the legendary Cailler chocolate. The Maison Cailler chocolate factory in Broc, just below Gruyères, offers tours that are among the most popular tourist experiences in the region.
