Fukuyama
Fukuyama is a city located in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture in the Chugoku region of western Japan, situated along the Ashida River near the Seto Inland Sea. With a population of approximately 460,000 people, it is the second largest city in Hiroshima Prefecture and a significant industrial and commercial center in western Japan. The city is known for its steel industry, its historic castle, and its exceptional rose culture, which gives it a distinctive and fragrant identity among Japanese cities.
Fukuyama's history centers on its castle, Fukuyama Castle, which was constructed in 1622 by the Mizuno clan and served as the center of the Fukuyama Domain throughout the Edo period. The castle was notable for having a northern-facing turret with iron armor plates — a rare defensive feature. The castle was largely destroyed during the American bombing raids of 1945 but was reconstructed in 1966 and now serves as a local history museum. The castle grounds, with their cherry blossoms in spring, form one of the city's most beloved public spaces.
Fukuyama is most famously associated with roses. Each year the city celebrates the Fukuyama Rose Festival, held in May when the city's numerous rose parks, gardens, and street plantings burst into spectacular bloom. The city claims to be one of Japan's largest producers of cut roses, and the tradition of rose cultivation here dates back to efforts to beautify the city after the destruction of World War II. Today, over one million rose bushes of hundreds of varieties bloom throughout the city each spring, creating a spectacular floral landscape that draws visitors from across Japan.
The steel industry, particularly JFE Steel's massive Fukuyama Works, is the backbone of the city's economy. This enormous integrated steel complex along the Seto Inland Sea coastline is one of the largest steel production facilities in Japan and contributes significantly to the national supply of steel for automotive and construction industries. The surrounding industrial zone also includes chemical, machinery, and transport equipment manufacturers.
The Tomonoura area, a picturesque historic port town within the Fukuyama municipality, is one of the best-preserved traditional port landscapes in Japan, with Edo-period warehouses, fishing boats, and a tranquil harbor that has inspired artists and filmmakers — it was reportedly the inspiration for the setting of the Studio Ghibli film Ponyo by Hayao Miyazaki.
Fukuyama's blend of medieval castle heritage, industrial might, extraordinary rose culture, and the charming historic port of Tomonoura gives it a multifaceted appeal that makes it well worth exploring for visitors traveling along the San'yo coast between Hiroshima and Osaka.
