Gagnoa

Gagnoa lies in south-central Ivory Coast, in the transition zone where the dense rainforest of the south gives way to wooded savanna. It is the capital of the Gôh region and one of the principal towns of the interior, set among low green hills and watered by tributaries of the Sassandra River. The climate is hot and humid with two rainy seasons, and the surrounding countryside is a continuous mosaic of cocoa and coffee plantations, forest patches, food gardens and villages.

Around two hundred and fifty thousand people live in the town and its immediate area. Gagnoa sits at the heart of the Ivorian cocoa belt, and the buying, storing and transporting of cocoa beans dominates its commercial life, supported by coffee, rubber, oil palm, cotton, rice and timber. Ivory Coast is the largest cocoa producer in the world, and towns like Gagnoa are where that trade meets the farmers, with warehouses, cooperatives, transport firms and busy markets. Small manufacturing, sawmills, administration and education provide further employment.

The region is the homeland of the Bété people, one of the larger ethnic groups of the country, whose villages, masks and dances give the area a strong cultural identity. French colonial administration arrived at the beginning of the twentieth century and met determined resistance in these forests. Gagnoa developed as an administrative post and then as a centre of the plantation economy, drawing migrant workers from the north of the country and from Burkina Faso and Mali. That mixture of peoples brought prosperity but also tensions over land, which surfaced during the political crises that troubled Ivory Coast in the 2000s. The town is also known as the birthplace of Laurent Gbagbo, who served as president of the country.

Gagnoa is a working town rather than a tourist resort, but visitors enjoy the animated central market, where cocoa, plantain, yam, fabrics and household goods are traded, the Catholic cathedral that serves the diocese, and the viewpoints from the hills around, including the wooded slope that overlooks the town. The countryside offers cocoa farm visits, waterfalls, sacred forests and villages where traditional weaving and carving continue. The Marahoué National Park to the north and the beaches of the Atlantic coast are within reach for longer trips.

Bété culture is expressed in polyphonic singing, complex drumming and the masked dances performed at funerals and festivals, and the region has produced many of the country's best-known musicians and writers. Everyday food includes foutou of pounded plantain or cassava with groundnut and palm nut sauces, attiéké, grilled fish and spicy pepper sauces, washed down with palm wine or bangui.

Paved roads link Gagnoa with Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Daloa and San Pedro, and bush taxis and buses run frequently. Secondary schools, a teacher training college and agricultural and technical institutes serve the region, with a university at nearby Daloa.

Gagnoa is important as a hub of the cocoa economy and as a centre of Bété cultural life.
