Gajuwaka

Gajuwaka is a large suburb of Visakhapatnam, the principal port city of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, lying a few kilometres inland from the Bay of Bengal on the coastal plain between the Eastern Ghats and the sea. Formerly a separate municipality, it was absorbed into the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation in 2005 and now forms one of the busiest zones of the city, with a population of around three hundred thousand.

Gajuwaka owes its growth entirely to heavy industry. It sits at the centre of one of India's most important industrial belts, close to the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, one of the country's largest integrated steelworks, and to a major oil refinery, a zinc smelter, fertiliser and chemical plants, shipbuilding yards and dozens of engineering and fabrication units. Tens of thousands of workers and their families live in the suburb, and the township built for steelworkers lies just to the south-west. Housing, markets, showrooms, private hospitals and coaching centres have followed, turning what was a cluster of fishing and farming villages into a dense commercial district.

The main road through Gajuwaka is one of the busiest in the region, carrying traffic on the national highway between Chennai and Kolkata as well as trucks moving between the port and the industrial estates. It is lined with shops selling gold, textiles, electronics and machinery, and the junction area is a major hub for buses and share autos serving the western half of the city.

The suburb itself has few monuments, but the surroundings are rich. The hill temple of Simhachalam, dedicated to Varaha Narasimha and dating in its present form to the eleventh century, stands a short distance north and is one of the great pilgrimage sites of coastal Andhra, famous for the annual ceremony when the sandalwood paste covering the deity is removed for a single day. Visakhapatnam's beaches, the hilltop park of Kailasagiri with its cable car, the decommissioned submarine museum on the seafront, and the Borra caves and Araku Valley in the hills inland are all within easy reach.

Culturally the area belongs to the Telugu coastal tradition, with Sankranti, Ugadi, Vinayaka Chavithi and Dussehra celebrated on a large scale, temple festivals in the older villages, and a food culture built on rice, seafood, tamarind and chilli.

Transport is good and improving. Suburban railway stations at Duvvada and Simhachalam serve the area, city buses run frequently, the airport is around fifteen kilometres away, and a metro rail project for Visakhapatnam has been planned to pass through the corridor. Engineering and pharmacy colleges operate locally, and Andhra University lies in the city.

Industrial, crowded and energetic, Gajuwaka is the working heart of Visakhapatnam and a good place to see how India's manufacturing economy shapes urban life.
