Galaţi stands in eastern Romania on the left bank of the Danube, close to the point where the Siret and the Prut join the great river and only a short distance from the borders with Moldova and Ukraine. The setting is one of low terraces above a vast expanse of water, marsh and reed bed, and the city looks out over one of the widest navigable stretches of the Danube in the country. Summers are hot and dry, winters cold and windy, with the crivăţ blowing in from the eastern steppe.

Roughly two hundred and fifteen thousand people live in Galaţi, making it one of the larger cities in Romania. Its significance is above all maritime and industrial, for it is the country's principal river port, accessible to seagoing vessels, and the home of both the largest steelworks in Romania and one of the most productive shipyards on the Danube. Vessels built here sail to owners across Europe.

The site has been settled since antiquity, close to the Roman fort of Tirighina Bărboşi, and the town appears in written records in the fifteenth century as the chief port of the principality of Moldavia. Grain, timber and salt moved through its wharves, and in the nineteenth century Galaţi became the seat of the European Commission of the Danube, a body created after the Crimean War to regulate navigation on the river. That period gave the city a free port, a cosmopolitan merchant population of Greeks, Italians, Jews and Armenians, and a handsome stock of nineteenth century public buildings. Heavy fighting in both world wars and extensive socialist era construction later changed its appearance considerably.

The most attractive part of the city today is the long riverside promenade, where cafés and terraces look across to the empty green expanse of the Brăila floodplain and to ships waiting their turn at the quays. Among the historic buildings are the small fortified Precista Church of the sixteenth century, whose upper floor served as a refuge and firing position, the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, the Administrative Palace and the University Palace. The Natural Sciences Museum Complex, with its planetarium, botanical garden and aquarium devoted to the fish of the Danube, is a favourite family destination, and the Museum of Visual Art holds a notable collection of modern Romanian painting.

Cultural life centres on the Vasile Alecsandri Drama Theatre, the Nae Leonard Music Theatre and a lively summer calendar of festivals along the waterfront. Trams, trolleybuses and buses cover the city, while rail and road links run to Bucharest, Brăila and the Moldovan border, and a bridge over the Danube at Brăila, opened in 2023, has greatly improved access to Dobrogea and the coast.

The Dunărea de Jos University, named after the lower Danube, teaches engineering, naval architecture, food science and medicine, and supplies much of the technical workforce of the region. Galaţi appeals to visitors for its river panoramas, its industrial energy and its position at the gateway to the Danube Delta.
