Geita
Geita lies in north-western Tanzania, a little south of the shores of Lake Victoria and about a hundred and twenty kilometres west of the lake port of Mwanza. The town sits in rolling country of granite hills, scattered acacia and small farms, at an altitude that keeps temperatures pleasant despite its position close to the equator. It is the capital of Geita Region, one of the newest regions in the country, created in 2012.
The urban population is well over one hundred thousand and rising quickly, while the region as a whole counts more than two and a half million residents. Geita's significance is straightforward and substantial: it is the centre of Tanzanian gold mining. The Geita Gold Mine, worked on a large industrial scale, is one of the biggest gold operations in Africa, and the surrounding hills support thousands of small-scale and artisanal miners as well. Gold from this district is a major contributor to Tanzania's export earnings.
People have panned for gold in the Lake Victoria greenstone belt for a very long time, but organised prospecting began under German colonial administration in the early twentieth century and expanded after the territory passed to Britain. Mining continued intermittently through the colonial period and the early decades of independence, then was transformed in the late 1990s when large foreign investment reopened the deposits with modern open-pit methods. The town grew from a small settlement into a busy regional capital within a single generation, and the creation of the new region confirmed its status.
Geita is a working town rather than a tourist destination, but its position makes it a useful base. Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, is close enough for day trips to fishing villages and beaches. Rubondo Island National Park, an unusual forested island sanctuary in the lake, protects chimpanzees, elephants, sitatunga antelope and huge numbers of birds. To the south and west lie the Burigi-Chato National Park and routes towards Kigoma and Lake Tanganyika, while Mwanza offers rock-strewn lakeside scenery.
Most residents belong to the Sukuma people, the largest ethnic group in Tanzania, whose dance societies, drumming traditions and cattle culture remain strong. Swahili serves as the common language, markets sell fish from the lake alongside cassava, maize and bananas, and the town's bars and small restaurants are lively in the evenings, particularly when football is shown. Cotton, rice and fishing supplement mining as sources of income.
Tarmac roads link Geita to Mwanza, Bukoba and the Rwandan and Ugandan borders, and ferries cross the lake from nearby ports. The regional airstrip and the larger airport at Mwanza handle air traffic. Schooling has expanded rapidly, with new secondary schools and vocational and mining training colleges preparing young people for work in the industry.
Geita shows a fast-changing side of Tanzania, where mineral wealth, rapid urban growth and traditional lake-shore life meet within a few kilometres of each other.
