Genève
Genève (Geneva) is Switzerland's second-most populous city, situated at the southwestern tip of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) where the Rhône River exits the lake, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland known as Romandy. One of the world's most international cities, Geneva is a global hub for diplomacy, humanitarian work, and international governance, home to hundreds of international organizations including the United Nations European headquarters and the International Committee of the Red Cross, making it arguably the diplomatic capital of the world.
With a population of approximately 205,000 in the city and over 1.2 million in the greater Geneva metropolitan area (which extends into France), Geneva is a city of exceptional cosmopolitan character. About 40 percent of the city's residents are foreign nationals from around the world, and over 500,000 people hold an employment permit from international organizations or multinational corporations. This global population drives demand for luxury goods, private banking, and high-end services that have made Geneva one of the world's most expensive cities — and one of its most sophisticated.
Geneva's humanitarian tradition was established in the 19th century. Henry Dunant, a Genevan businessman, founded the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 following his horror at the carnage of the Battle of Solferino. The ICRC headquarters in Geneva and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum tell this story. The Palais des Nations, built in the 1930s for the League of Nations and now the European headquarters of the United Nations, can be visited on guided tours and offers a remarkable window into the world of international diplomacy.
The old city (Vieille Ville) of Geneva, perched on the hill above the lake, is centered on the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre — a Calvinist church since the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, when John Calvin made Geneva the center of Reformed Protestantism. The cathedral's North Tower can be climbed for views over the lake and the Alps. The Reformation Wall (Mur des Réformateurs) in the Bastions Park, featuring monumental sculptures of Calvin, Beza, Farel, and Knox, commemorates Geneva's central role in the Protestant Reformation.
The Jet d'Eau, a 140-meter water jet shooting from the lake, is Geneva's most iconic image and visible for many kilometers. The city's lakefront, lined with luxury hotels, private bank headquarters, and the English Garden (Jardin Anglais) with its floral clock, is one of the most elegant waterfronts in Europe. The Patek Philippe Museum, the Museum of Art and History, and the Natural History Museum are among the city's major cultural institutions.
Geneva International Airport (Aéroport de Genève) is one of the busiest in Switzerland, with extensive international connections. The railway station (Gare de Genève-Cornavin) connects the city to Zurich, Basel, Bern, and to Paris via TGV in about three hours. Efficient trams and buses serve the city. The city is also a hub for skiing day trips to the Alps (Chamonix, Verbier, Crans-Montana).
Geneva is a city of global consequence, exceptional natural setting, and remarkable cultural offer — a place where the world's most pressing humanitarian and diplomatic questions are addressed against a backdrop of Alpine beauty.
