Gjirokastër
Gjirokastër is a unique stone city in southern Albania, perched dramatically on the slopes of the Gjerë Mountains above the Drino River valley. Known as the "City of Stone" for its striking architecture of grey slate-roofed houses and cobblestone streets, Gjirokastër is one of the best-preserved Ottoman towns in the Balkans and a place of rare historical and cultural distinction.
Home to roughly 20,000 residents, Gjirokastër punches far above its weight culturally. Together with Berat, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, recognized as an outstanding example of a well-preserved Ottoman town. The city is also famous as the birthplace of two towering figures in Albanian history: the communist dictator Enver Hoxha and the Nobel Prize-nominated writer Ismail Kadare, whose novels brought Gjirokastër to international literary attention.
The city's origins date back to the early medieval period, though it grew significantly under Byzantine and later Ottoman rule. The Ottomans transformed it into a regional center of commerce and administration, and the grand stone mansions known as "kulla" built by wealthy merchants and landowners during the 17th through 19th centuries remain the city's most iconic architectural features. These multi-story tower houses, built from local limestone and slate, were designed to serve as both homes and fortresses.
Dominating the skyline above the city is the Gjirokastër Castle, a massive Byzantine-Ottoman fortress that today houses a National Weapons Museum as well as a captured American military aircraft from the Cold War era, a reminder of Albania's complex 20th-century history. The castle offers sweeping views of the Drino Valley and the surrounding mountains, and hosts the National Folklore Festival every five years, drawing performers from across Albania.
The Old Bazaar of Gjirokastër, with its traditional shops and craftsmen, gives visitors a sense of the city's trading heritage. The Skenduli House and the Zekate House are among the finest examples of the grand Ottoman mansions open to visitors, offering a glimpse into the lavish interiors and sophisticated architecture of Gjirokastër's merchant elite.
Cultural life in Gjirokastër is enriched by its museums, including the Ethnographic Museum housed in the former home of Enver Hoxha, which provides insight into traditional Albanian domestic life. The Ismail Kadare Literary House celebrates the city's most celebrated contemporary writer. Local cuisine features hearty mountain dishes including qifqi, a rice ball dish unique to Gjirokastër, along with lamb preparations and local wines.
Bus services connect Gjirokastër to Tirana, Sarandë, and other Albanian cities, and the town is also accessible from the Greek border. The steep cobblestone streets require some effort to navigate but reward visitors with constantly changing perspectives on the remarkable urban landscape. Gjirokastër remains an essential destination for anyone seeking to understand Albania's complex and fascinating history, a living museum of stone and memory in the heart of the southern Albanian highlands.
