Current Time in Godomè, Benin

Godome lies in southern Benin, on the Atlantic coastal plain immediately west of Cotonou, the largest city and economic capital of the country. It belongs to the commune of Abomey-Calavi in the Atlantique department, and although it is administratively a district rather than an independent city, it has grown into one of the busiest and most heavily populated parts of the national urban area. Lake Nokoue lies to the east, the ocean a short distance to the south, and the land between is flat, sandy and criss-crossed by lagoons.

Several hundred thousand people live in Godome and the neighbourhoods that surround it, and the population has multiplied over the past two decades as families priced out of Cotonou have moved westwards. The district functions as a vast commercial and residential suburb. Its central junction, where the coastal highway towards Togo meets the road north to Abomey-Calavi, is one of the great traffic crossroads of Benin, lined with markets, workshops, transport yards, petrol stations and small factories. Trade dominates daily life, from wholesale depots and building material yards to the informal stalls and motorcycle taxis known as zemidjan that carry most people to work.

The area has deep roots in the Fon and Aizo country of the south, historically part of the world of the kingdoms of Dahomey and Allada, whose traditions of vodun religion, drumming and craftsmanship remain strong. Godome itself was a village of farmers and fishers until the second half of the twentieth century, when the growth of Cotonou after independence in 1960 began to spill along the coastal road. The construction of the highway, the expansion of the port of Cotonou and the arrival of migrants from across Benin and from neighbouring countries turned the village into a district of continuous building, and the pace of change has only accelerated since.

Visitors passing through find their attractions mainly in the surroundings. Ganvie, the celebrated stilt village on Lake Nokoue where thousands of people live in houses raised above the water and travel entirely by canoe, is reached from the lakeside jetty at Abomey-Calavi just to the north. The beaches west along the coast, the historic town of Ouidah with its Portuguese fort, python temple and Door of No Return commemorating the transatlantic slave trade, and the palaces of Abomey inland are all within reach. Godome itself offers the vivid experience of its markets, its street food and the fabric and tailoring trades that thrive here.

The community is young, mobile and mixed, with Fon, Yoruba, Aizo, Goun and other groups living together and French serving as the common formal language. The University of Abomey-Calavi, the largest institution of higher education in Benin, lies close by and gives the district a substantial student population, and numerous private schools and colleges have opened alongside it.

Godome is important as one of the fastest growing parts of the Beninese urban area and as a crossroads of trade and movement in the south of the country.
