Gold Coast

Gold Coast is a coastal city in the state of Queensland in eastern Australia, located approximately 80 kilometers south of Brisbane, the state capital. Stretching along 57 kilometers of Pacific coastline, Gold Coast is Australia's sixth-largest city, with a population of approximately 700,000 people. Its name is synonymous with sunshine, surf, and a relaxed lifestyle, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire country.

The area was inhabited by the Yugambeh people for thousands of years before European settlement. The first European contact came in the 1820s, and during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the region developed as a seaside resort destination for residents of Brisbane and other Queensland towns. The township of Surfers Paradise, which would become the iconic heart of the modern Gold Coast, began attracting visitors with its golden beaches and warm climate in the early twentieth century. The city was officially incorporated in 1959 and has grown continuously since then into the sprawling coastal metropolis it is today.

The Gold Coast's beaches are its defining feature. Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads, Currumbin, Coolangatta, and dozens of other surf breaks offer world-class conditions for surfing, swimming, and beach recreation. The city's surf culture is deep-rooted, and Gold Coast has produced numerous world champion surfers. The annual Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast surfing competition draws elite professional surfers from around the world and places the city on the global surf stage.

Inland from the coast, the Gold Coast hinterland offers a strikingly different landscape. The Border Ranges and Lamington National Park feature ancient rainforest, volcanic mountains, and spectacular waterfalls, forming part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia UNESCO World Heritage Area. Hiking trails through this lush wilderness provide a dramatic contrast to the beachside bustle of the coast.

Gold Coast is also known as a theme park capital of Australia. Dreamworld, Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, and Wet'n'Wild are among the major attractions that draw families and thrill-seekers from around Australia and internationally, contributing significantly to the local tourism economy.

The city hosted major events during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, a transformative occasion that upgraded venues, transportation infrastructure, and international profile. The Commonwealth Games Village development helped accelerate urban regeneration in several parts of the city.

Griffith University and Bond University — Australia's first private university — are the primary higher education institutions in Gold Coast, offering programs in law, business, health sciences, and the arts. Bond University in particular has a strong international reputation and draws students from dozens of countries.

The city's light rail network, tram system, and bus services provide public transportation throughout the urban area, complemented by Gold Coast Airport, which connects the city to Australian capitals and several international destinations.

Gold Coast is a city that has mastered the art of leisure — combining natural beauty, outdoor adventure, entertainment, and an easy-going culture that continues to draw residents and visitors seeking an unmatched Australian lifestyle.
